I disagree fyo. It looked to me like the hands were on the side. He had clear control prior to hitting the ground. Had he been 8 feet in the air, I think he'd have had more time to bring it in and secure it.
Looking at it again frame-by-frame (there's a very nice slowmo from head on), I probably have to cede that point. His hands were mostly on top with the right and left thumbs/index fingers almost touching, but his hands are so large that most of the hand is on the side and at least a pinky appears to be under.
Additionally, the ball doesn't just shift, like I thought it did. It actually tumbles completely over.
Bottom line, for that to be a catch, he has to keep his hands under the ball or so tightly held it doesn't move when the ground is struck.
