Singlepayer will not work in the U.S.

Perhaps, but not for the reasons you stated.  The fact is we are spoiled Americans that like to gripe and complain about any change.  (For example there is no reason for the penny, it cost more to produce than it's worth; same for the dollar bill it should be eliminated.)  That is the reason Obama had to lie to the American People to get them to accept Obamacare as a stepping stone to a single payer system.

You have to change our entire sales tax structure if the penny is done away with. Sales tax would have to revert back to 5 cents, which isn't happening; or extent to 10 cents, which consumers would not support without breaks elsewhere. This simplicity of doing away with the penny argument is not correct. Now imagine our world without the dollar.

So then, you don't really have a problem with "garbage" entering our food supply, as (in the absence of the FDA) much, MUCH more garbage would be in the market (literally anything that anyone wanted to sell).

As I understand it, your actual objection is that the FDA is supposedly "keeping out" organic foods and other medicines.

You're working under the flawed assumption that because something is government regulated, it is safer or better.
Yes, because (having read a history book) I know what the market was like before these regulations existed.

Quote
That's ideal and all, except for the fact that government agencies are run by people, just like corporations. These government agencies need money to operate, just like corporations. The people at these agencies need to get paid, just like corporations. Not all the people that work at government agencies are of the highest integrity, just like corporations.
But unlike corporations, these government agencies have at least some duty towards enforcing the laws on the books regarding product safety and quality.  A corporation has no interest in such standards unless they would result in a more profitable  product than an unregulated version of the same product.
