I ruled in favor of him, but marriage has taught me a valuable lesson along these lines.  Being a rational male, I have always considered that what a person says is what they mean.  My wife often laughingly says to me during these types of situations, "You aren't supposed to do what i asked, you are supposed to do what I meant."
