I just ran a 5k this weekend and it kicked my butt. Did you ever end up running that 10k? I couldn't find a resolution to this post.

no, never did, i got fat and quit running instead.

kind of true, kind of not.  Still never did a 10K - that part is true.

Since this thread was 10 years old, since then, i did 40 5K's in 2016-2017 and then 52 5K's in 2018.  I've probably done easily more than 150 5K's since this post was written.  I never got my time under 40 minutes.

I've recently started doing them again after like 3 years of being a fat quitter.  Did one 2 weeks ago, got miserably sick, but signed up for 2 more 5K races by the end of this year.  I clearly do not - and can not - run the whole thing.  I used to strive to be able to run 1 mile without stopping to rest.  I think I've done that maybe twice, ever.

If you enjoy running, stick to it.  The conditioning goes away SO FAST when you stop.  But the race community, you'll find, is a good one.  You start seeing the same people at every race and recognizing other runners...  All the advice in this thread is good advice and should be considered.
