The year was 1994, Florida State was a dominant force in College Football, Super Nintendo was putting the Sega Genesis console into bankruptcy, and it was a strange year for the world. Michael Jordan was not in the NBA, and Hulk Hogan made his debut in rival wrestling organization WCW, wrestling Ric Flair for the World Title at the Bash of the Beach, after quitting the WWF in lieu of substance abuse allegations.
The music world was smack-dab in the middle of a huge transition. Gangster Rap was by far the most popular genre, with Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube leading the charge, on the heels of Dr. Dre's 1992 release "The Chronic". Hard Rock and Heavy Metal was being replaced by Grunge & Flannel Shirts, and the leader of that movement, Kurt Cobain, had just killed himself. Metallica, after touring the world non-stop in promoting the Black album for 2.5 years straight, took a much needed vacation in 1994, and were nowhere to be found. Beavis, Butthead, and even Daria were mistified at the sight of another Bricklayers vs. Violators game.
Coming off their best-selling album ever in 1992 titled "Countdown To Extinction", Megadeth released a follow-up in 1994 titled "Youthanasia", that embraced their transition from Super Heavy Metal to Hard Rock, with harder riffs, shorter song times, keeping the Megadeth attitude that fans worldwide have grown acoustomed to.
Surprisingly, Youthanasia's album can be listened to cover-to-cover, a feature lacking in many albums today. It hardly lets up, and even track 4's "A Tout Le Monde" ballad-like rythym can be rocked out to.
