something i found. it talka about a trade that was in place that didn't happen and you'll be shocked to hear it involved halladay, wells, and Carpenter for a couple of no names.

THE TORONTO Blue Jays were in the hunt with the trading deadline looming in 2000, but were looking for some pitching help. So a deal was struck with the Colorado Rockies.

Toronto was to get starter Pedro Astacio and reliever Jose Jimenez. They were to give up pitchers Chris Carpenter and Roy Halladay and outfielder Vernon Wells.

Astonishing as that seems, here's something even more stunning. Rockies ownership nixed the deal over the objections of general manager Dan O'Dowd because they thought fans would be upset if they traded the popular Astacio.

Jimenez hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2004. Astacio was traded to Houston the following year and is now on the disabled list with the Nationals, his sixth different team since Colorado.

Halladay, still with the Blue Jays, won the American League Cy Young Award in 2003. Carpenter, now with the Cardinals, was last season's NL Cy Young winner. Wells is a career .285 hitter who has won two straight Gold Gloves for Toronto.

Now that's a bad decision.

Bad luck, on the other hand, can be a lot trickier to define.

Yankees almost traded Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada to Cincinnati in 1995 for David Wells. Some of the trades that never happened are just crazy to hear.

To be fair though, Carpenter wasn't gonna do jack shit if he went to Colorado. Halladay would've had some success because he is a sinkerball pitcher, but not THAT much. Wells would've tracked down a lot of balls....as they went into the stands. Colorado is Colorado.

Well - Edge - think about the success Wells had between those years up until a couple years ago.  The guy was a monster and the ultimate gamer.  That wouldn't have been a horrible trade.  I love Mariano Rivera, but 40 save a season closers almost grow on trees.  It's not like the deal would have been Rivera for BK Kim!

40 save closers AREN'T that hard to come by, but guys who have been near perfect in October are. I think he still has the best postseason ERA of any pitcher, or at least modern day pitcher. I think Schilling has the best for a starter, but I am not sure.

Wells was a Yankee 2 years later and then 3 years after that. We didn't need him in 1996, but we needed Rivera who was lights out. Posada later became and still is one of the better hitting catchers in the game.

If this trade goes down, maybe the Yankees don't win 1 World Series, that's how great Mo has been.
