Konami Bracket:

Why “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” shouldn’t win.
TMNT got through the first couple of round due to a lucky draw, despite being one of the least technically impressive or influential games on the list of 64.  It’s essentially cookie cutter, beat-em-up gameplay, with characters that are designed to take consistent damage, in order to eat up quarters.  The formula worked with other popular franchises, without much change, as seen with The Simpsons and X-Men.  And even what TMNT does, it doesn’t do better than others: the characters lack balance, and the sprites are essentially cheap palette swaps.

Why “Super Mario Kart” shouldn’t win.
It is unfairly credited for inventing cart racing.  It was the first to put mega-popular characters and bring it to the forefront, so people just assume that it was the innovator.  It used “rubber band” AI to keep races close, and it depended on an endlessly list of corny weapons to desperately tie a racing game to the Mario franchise.
