I saw it on ESPNnews
but here's the link

After re-signing halfback Tatum Bell to a one-year contract, the Lions have decided to part ways with last year's starting running back, Kevin Jones.

Jones was informed Thursday morning by the team that he will be released. The former No. 1 pick was entering the final year of his rookie contract. Because of an escalator of his base salary and a roster bonus, Jones was scheduled to make $2.5125 million this season. His release will save the team that amount this season. The 25-year-old back missed seven games over the past two years and averaged only 3.8 yards per carry in each of those seasons.

Looking for another running back option, the Lions are considering the possibility of visiting with Bucs halfback Michael Pittman, who is a free agent.

Why don't teams try and trade talent like this?

its possible that they did but maybe his contract was too rich or no one in a decent draft slot had a RB need, or maybe they were just plain asking too much for him.

I'd guess its the same reason why you can't trade Zach Thomas...?

the thing with running backs is that ultimately they're a dime a dozen, and can be very reliant on the system for their success. And even "good" RB's don't have the impact they think they do

See Broncos, Denver; Barber, Tiki

I don't think any position is more dominated by other players in terms of performance. The O-line and lead blocker can make an average RB look great.

At least with quarterbacks and receivers, it's easier to spot if a QB isn't getting the ball in there.

I LOVE Kevin Jones.  I think Martz screwed the pooch with him.  I would love to see Jones in a Dolphins uniform.

I wouldn't mind,Jones has  had a few injuries,but So has Ronnie,and Ricky isn't reliable....If we could get him for the cheap ...I wouldn't bitch ....
