THE ASSCLOWN AWARD

While it would seem odd to induct a coach into the Ring of Dishonor who had winning seasons his first four years with the team, the fact is, Wannestedt's damage to the Miami team was 2fold.  1) His poor decisions and coaching hurt the team, preventing Miami's most talents teams in the post-Marino ERA from achieving their goal.  2) His poor drafting record is still hurting the team today.

Start with a Monday Night in October of 2000.  The Dolphins are battling the Jets in a game that would determine who the front runner would be in the AFC race that year.  The Dolphins jump to a 30-7 lead, but Wannestedt's poor playing calling allows the Jets to rally and tie the game, which the eventually win in overtime.  That game would prove to be the difference between the Dolphins getting a first round bye and having to play in the first round.

Now, it's April of 2000, Dolphins on the clock.  Drew Brees and Jamar Fletcher available.  We have one of the best secondaries in the league, with Walker, Madison, Surtain, and Marion.  Who do we take?  The cornerback!!!!  Drew Brees would go on to have a solid career in the NFL.  Both QBs on our roster in 2000 are currently out of football.  Fletcher would go on to hurt us bad in coming seasons.

Flash forward to December of 2001.  Dolphins playing the Patriots for the division.  Dolphins fall behind 20-3.  Fiedler (who led like 5 fourth quarter comebacks that year) is passing well.  (he'd throw for over 310 yards that day.  Lamar Smith had NOT run like he had in 2000 for the entire season.  He'd been stuffed several times earlier in the game.  Dolphins have the ball third down and 2 at the NE 22.  Do we pass, as we had done successfully on the drive.  NO!  Smith gets stuffed.  Fourth and 1.  Same call.  Same Result.  Patriots take over on downs and the Dolphins end the game one touchdown short, 20-13.  Pats get the division and the bye.  In this game, Wannestedt also did what he mastered in his tenure at Miami:  Waste timeouts by challenging plays that will never be overturned.  If that game had been different, who knows, maybe the pats dynasty never happens.

2002:  The most talented Dolphins team of the post Marino era.  7 pro bowlers on defense.  Ricky Williams leads the NFL in rushing.  McMike has a good year at TE.  Chambers played well at wideout.  Fiedler goes down and the Dolphins fall to 9-5 after a 5-1 start.  Now, they're playing Minnesota and who gets burned twice on the Vikings last, deciding TD drive?  Wannestedts' draftee Jamar Fletcher!!!. (thanks, brian fein).  The Vikings win 20-17

Now its the finale.  The Dolphins are playing the Patriots and have a 24-13 when the most overrated quarterback in the history of the game (Tom Brady) lofts a floater towards Givens with Fletcher covering him.  PI and the Patriots close to within 24-21.  Then the KO for reasons that contradict the laws of physics, doesn't bounce into the endzone.  So the fins have the ball at the 4.  Leading rusher in the backfield.  Clearly were going to run the ball, right?  Wannestedt's brilliant mind can't fathom this and 2 Elf passes fall incomplete.  Now we HAVE to throw and Fiedler is forced to run with it.  Then Mark Royals, who Wannestedt for some reason decided to keep on the roster because he needed a punter who shanks punts.  Gets off a 23 yard punt.  The defense forces a three and out, but because Wannestedt kept shanker (royals) on the roster the Patriots can send out their clutch kicker to tie it and then win us in overtime.

Wannestedt wasn't done destroying the dolphins.  The next year's draft, he took Eddie Moore, passing on receivers such as anquan boldin and tyrone calico.  Moore rarely played over his brief NFL career.   Also, Wannestedt decided Wade "Sieve" Smith was worth a second round pick.

Still, 2003 looked like a good year for the Dolphins.  But more stupidity by Wannestedt in his play calling, clock management, player handling (like running ricky only 18 times against a weak run defense in philly week 15)  sabtoge all the talent and the Dolphins go 10-6.  Sieve would cost the Dolphins a win against the Colts.

Ricky, overworked by Wannestedt in 2003, decides to retire.  Add in abortion of draft and more Wannestedt stupidity and you've got yourself a 1-8 team.  Wannestedt resigned but the damage was done.  The Miami franchise kept falling is now the laughingstock on the NFL.

For his terrible coaching decisions, game management, clock management, etc that sabotaged our best chances to get guys like Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor rings and ruined some of our most talented teams, as well as for his terrible drafts that have crippled our franchise, TDMMC is pleased to induct Dave Wannestedt as its latest member of the Ring of Dishonor

(Can we get Spielman in there too?  He messed up this team as well)

I take exception to this. I don't like when other people try to force the ROD.

Dave said we can write speeches all we want, but he'll never use those words.  The ROD is something him and his brother came up with and while it's ok for us to give our input, the final decision rests with them.

Why does it seem like you people have nothing better to do than wait for ROD?  Honestly?  There are more important things in the world.  When it comes, we will rejoice in discussion.  Until then, I recommend you try to find something else to talk about.

Oh, I don't know.  Go out on a date, go catch a movie, read a book, hit the gym, learn a new language, drink a few Crown & Cokes at the bar, etc.  I mean, there are a ton of other things you could do while waiting for the latest installment of the ROD!

You know how hard it is for a Dolphins fan living in Boston to pick up chicks?  I do hit the gym and bench 25 pounds over my body weight.
