Off-season schedule changes from ‘07

By Edgar Thompson | Friday, March 21, 2008, 06:03 PM

The Dolphins will begin off-season conditioning on Monday, but pass on the chance in the coming weeks to hold an extra mini-camp.

NFL rules allow an extra three-day camp for teams with a new head coach.

The rookie mini-camp the weekend after the draft also will be just that, for rookies, not for newly drafted players and veterans on the roster.

Like Nick Saban a couple of years ago, Sparano could use the rookie camp as a tryout for veteran free agents as the Dolphins look to fill holes not addressed by the draft. The Dolphins found CB Michael Lehan that way in ‘06.

Last season, Cam Cameron and his coaches did things differently, using every off-season opportunity to practice with a full team.

In addition to a mini-camp in June, Cameron’s Dolphins held a mini-camp last April and veterans on the roster joined the rookies in May.

Cameron’s team suffered an inordinate amount of injuries last season, even though training camp seemed to be pretty low key, with minimal full contact. There may or may not be a correlation with holding camps each month, beginning in April.

Tony Sparano’s Dolphins will stage only one mini-camp with a full squad, on June 6-8. What sessions, if any, will be open to the public have not been announced for either the June camp or rookie camp.

The Dolphins also will hold a dozen organized team activity sessions (OTAs) in the late spring, early summer.

Stay tuned. Will pass along dates for practices open to the public as they become available.
