Mexican kicker Gaytan gets tryout with Dolphins

DAVIE - If Radamez Rubio Gaytan can't make the team as a kicker the Dolphins might want to think about keeping him around to help in the kitchen.

Rubio Gaytan, an unsigned rookie free agent from Mexico City, recently finished training to become a chef. His specialty is "Mediterranean fusion," which centers on fish based dishes. But before turns to cooking fulltime he's giving his NFL dreams one more shot.

Along with free agent signee Dan Carpenter, who played at Montana, Rubio Gaytan is one of the two kickers participating in this weekend's rookie minicamp.

After playing soccer all of his life, Rubio Gaytan first kicked in college in Mexico City, where an NFL Europa scout spotted him. He went through a few tryouts for the since-defunct European league but never got signed. A friend who knows kicking coach Steve Hoffman got him an invite to Dolphins rookie camp.

"The coaches tell me I have potential," Rubio Gaytan said through his interpreter Ivan Campos, a maintenance worker at the Dolphins training facility.

On Saturday he hit 2 of 5 field goals from 65 yards in the morning session.

Rubio Gaytan speaks some English, but picked up Campos for help with communication on the advice of team vice president Bill Parcells, and Hoffman. Unsigned rookie free agent guard Chris Capote, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is the only other Spanish-speaking player in camp.

Players and coaches can get through to Rubio Gaytan if they try hard enough. Hoffman said as long as he speaks slowly, his kicker understands.
