Vernon Carey impressed with his prized bookend

By Tim Graham | Sunday, June 8, 2008, 12:58 AM

DAVIE — Veteran tackle Vernon Carey has no qualms about switching back to the right side, especially after getting a load of No. 1 draft pick Jake Long.

“Aw, man. Jake Long is a hard worker,” Carey said. “He listens to the coaches. He listens to me. He’s always trying to get better.

“He’s one of those guys, he’ll can come out here one day and do it bad and then the next day he picks it up right quick. I’m like, ‘Wow. I wish I had it like that.’ He’s a guy who can pick up things real good. That’s what you need at this level.”

Carey confessed his moves and footwork were “a little shaky at the beginning” when he made the change to accommodate Long’s arrival, but added the transition is coming along well.

“I know what it takes to get back there,” said Carey, who started 30 games at right tackle in ‘05 and ‘06.

Carey also joined in piling on praise for running back Ricky Williams, calling him “a workhorse.”

“This is my first (off-season) where I worked with him since I been here,” Carey said. “To see him all of-season, all summer, to work hard like he’s workng, you know he’s going to have a good year.”
