Shula-Parcells connection?

Former Dolphins NT Bob Baumhower gave me an interesting tidbit Monday and it had nothing to do with him and former DE Doug Betters being the latest recipients to go up on the Dolphins Honor Roll later this year.

I always knew that Dolphins czar Bill Parcells learned a great deal about talent evaluation from the late Giants front office wizard George Young - who was largely responsible for supplying Tuna with super talent for his two Super Bowl championship teams while coaching the Gints.

But did you know that Young began his NFL career with the Baltimore Colts when Don Shula was coaching there. Young cut his teeth under Shula wearing several hats, including offensive coordinator. Together they helped guide the Colts to a Super Bowl loss to the upstart Jets in '69.

Shula was hired away by Joe Robbie to take over the fledgling Dolphins in 1970. Five years later Shula brought Young to the Dolphins where he worked in the personnel dept. from 1975-78.  He then became head of football ops for the Giants and eventually teamed with Tuna to bring the Giants their first two Super Bowl titles.

So it's come full circle. Now it's Tuna stocking the shelves for Shula's favorite team. Of course, we'll have to wait to see if the Young-Shula-Parcells' connection reaps dividends.

Shula said recently that Parcells hasn't reached out to him. Nostalgia and sentimentality isn't one of Parcells' strong suits. At this point, I'm sure Dolfans are more concerned about wins.

I have all the respect in the world for shula, but why does he always  cop an attitude when people who currently run the dolphins don't seek his input. Shula, you and Marino own this town, nothing is going to change that. Everyone knows your legacy here as the head coach. I love hearing you speak, you're still pretty sharp for a man in his 80's, but your time has come and gone. Just wacth the games and offer assistance if needed.
