I remember a couple of years ago some here wanted Miami to draft this kid.    Not sure what went wrong in Atl., but he came out of college with high marks & some thought Atl. got a steal.  At 6'2" & 4.4 speed he will get another chance to show if it was him or the situation in Atl that prevented him from being the player most thought he was.  He was one of the topped rated CB in the '06 draft.

With Miami void of talent in the D backfield, I can see them taking a shot at him.

FALCONS DUMP JIMMY WILLIAMS
Posted by Mike Florio on June 17, 2008, 3:43 p.m. EDT

When the Falcons selected cornerback Jimmy Williams in the second round of the 2006 draft (37th overall), team owner Arthur Blank boasted about his growing collection of former Virginia Tech players.

“Now, we’re looking at five players on our roster from Virginia Tech in Michael Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Matt Lehr, Bryan Randall and now Jimmy Williams,” Blank said.  “So, we’re starting to build a little fraternity here of players from Virginia.”

In little more than two years since then, the “little fraternity” has performed like Bluto and Otter and Hoover and Flounder and D-Day, and Blank has become Dean Wormer.

Williams was the last to go, released on Tuesday by the team.

I was one of the people that wanted Jimmy Williams.  However, he ran afoul of the law shortly before his release, and was reportedly 20 lbs overweight when he showed up to mini-camp.  Jason Allen has shown more promise than Jimmy Williams at this point.  However, he is 24 and still has a chance to get his act together.  I don't know, maybe sign him to an incentive based contract and if he still sucks, then cut him.

No need to sign him.  They can claim him off waivers & owe him nothing if he does not make the team.

I'd give him a shot.  We need all the DB help we can get.

It's worth noting that when you claim someone off waivers, you assume the obligations of the existing contract.

In Williams' case, the contract looks quite good. Less than a million dollars for the two years he has remaining on his rookie contract. I've been unable to find details of the original deal, though, so there might be some prohibitive roster bonus type stuff in there. He was a first round pick after all, so $500k a year seems low for the back end of his contract.

He was a first round pick after all,
