^^Are you sure Papelon didn't make an appearance wearing Gregg's jersey??

Boston did have a clean save on Saturday night.  1, 2, 3 with two k's.  Easy peasy lemon squeezey.  And you know what?  It was BARD and not Papelbon.

And Papelbon's last two saves have been drama-free as well. Not that I expected you to notice, because...

Tepop to Ronnie Brown = Maine to Jonathon Papelbon

^^Funny how you point out "the last two."

His last ten appearances?  10 innings, nine hits, 3 walks, 3 earned runs, 7 saves, one blown save, one loss.

The teams in that ten game stretch?  The powerhouses known as Oakland, Kansas City, Nationals, Toronto, Texas, Baltimore and Oakland (again).

Against teams like that, minus Texas, his stat line should read 10 saves in 10 outings, 4 hits, no walks, 1 ER.  You know it and I know it.

No more weak sisters for a while.  Boston gets Tampa, New York, Detroit, Texas, Chicago...we'll see how Papelbon's high wire act plays out when he's not throwing to the Washington DC Babe Ruth all-stars.

Yes, and every time he does something that isn't perfect, we get to hear you rant about it. When he doesn't give you any drama and does his job with flawless efficiency...we hear not a single peep out of you.

No worries, Tepop...er...Maine.

Marlins fans know how badly Gregg sucks...that's why no one cried when he left here. If it weren't for Carlos Marmol's bipolar inconsistency, he'd have replaced Gregg in Chicago's closer role a long time ago. The Cubbies also have a reliever named Jeff Stevens that I feel has some great things going for him (like his name). Grin

Jeff Stevens is a complete bum.

As for the Cubs, Kevin Gregg single-handedly cost the Marlins 12 games last season.  Twelve games that the Marlins were winning and ended up losing thanks to Gregg blowing leads and saves.  It would have made a huge difference down the stretch to have those 12 games back.   Or even 9 or the 12...  I'm glad we got one back last night.

When Gregg gave up back to back HRs on consecutive pitches in the 9th inning yesterday, it marked the first time in the entire long history of the Cubs franchise that happened.

That's just crazy... If it were any team other than the Fish or Padres, I'd feel really bad for Lil_B right now.

Speaking of the Padres, we've made two good comebacks in the past week, and before losing 6-1 yesterday to the Brewers, SD had won 5 straight and averaged over 6 runs per game during that little streak.

I heard on TV that Pinella has no intention of moving Gregg out of the closer role.

Sorry, B - looks like you're in for a long season....

Remind me to compare you to Pats2006 next time your unfettered love for Papelbon shines through.  You mention the last two games, I pull up info from the last ten that - by the way - include the two you referenced.  And you act as though I took a random sample from April.  You hate being challenged to a point where you need to stoop to a new low?  Nice barb.

If I am reading people's opinions about closers correctly, who cares what happens in the 9th as long as the guy gets the save.  Right?  I mean, I've been called "Tepop" for pointing out that Papelbon's high wire act is getting really old and when he does this against a team not ranked in the bottom 5 of the MLB teams in total offense he's going to get spanked.

But I'm told, a few times, "he is getting saves."  Right?

So if that is the case we can toss out ERA, WHIP, walks allowed, K to inning ratio, all that.

Saves.  Saves are what matters.

Gregg has five blown saves.  That isn't good.  Papelbon has three blown saves.  Of Papelbon's three blown saves, two were three run leads.

Closers come and go.  Is Papelbon better than Gregg?  He's flashier.  Papelbon's ERA is better.  Gregg's walk/9IP is better.  Gregg has more strikeouts than Papelbon and his WHIP is a little better.  Both are very close in the blown save neighborhood.  Gregg has three losses to Papelbon's one loss.  Gregg also has four wins to Papelbon's one win.

You can't discuss good and bad closers without comparison.  While I am thrilled at what Papelbon brought to the table in prior years, I am less than enthused with what I am seeing this year.  And, I would also like to mention, Papelbon had to be shut down two years in a row due to shoulder fatigue.  Who is at fault is up for debate in that.  Flash back to last year's ALCS.  Papelbon was not available for that game.

Seriously.  Look it up if you don't believe me.  The world beating elite closer Jon Papelbon would not have been available to close GAME SEVEN of the AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES if needed.  No big deal, just a spot in the World Series hanging in the balance.

Where Papelbon shines over a guy like Gregg?  He certainly has more mystique.

I'm certainly not saying Gregg is someone I would feel comfortable with.  Look inside the numbers.  Gregg and Papelbon are sharing a lot of traits this season that scare me.  Papelbon is supposed to be elite.  He makes well over more than $2,000,000 more than Gregg.  He bar SHOULD be set higher.  Yet the end results are way too close for my comfort.

And that opinion sure as hell doesn't warrant a two year old style type swipe that Jeff took at me (in regards to the Tepop reference).

Thank you so much for taking 4 or 5 meandering paragraphs to sum up what you've already ranted about 100 times and to direct me to stats that I pore over every day already.

Not sure what about the style type swipe that you consider two years old...was it prominently used up here in 2007 that I don't remember? Do you know a lot of highly literate two year olds that strike text in their posts? Or was that just a preteen reactionary lashing-out to tell me that you were offended by the comparison to Tepop?

(my money's on "C")

And to put this topic back on track... Kevin Gregg still sucks, film at 11.

What I think is interesting is that Kevin Gregg has 4 wins, one of them came last Saturday, when Gregg enters a game, blows the save, and the offense bails his ass out in the 10th.  That has happened 4 times this season?  Really?  That's miserable.  He's lucky he's not 0-5...

Feel free to float right over my posts to something more entertaining and accommodating to your comfort level.

Feel even more freely to not comment on my posts.

And, back on subject, Gregg sucks.  And Papelbon isn't far behind.
