I know it was with humor, but calling Parcells FAT tuna is somewhat classless.

If this is true, you have to come to a bit of a conclusion that Parcells doesn't like what he sees in practice.

Way to throw a potential teammate under the bus, ass.

He made those remarks in December.

Get Carter? Are you kidding?

Guys, by now, most of you seen all the internet reports about former Cowboys (and St. Thomas Aquinas) great Michael Irvin said on his radio show that his pal Quincy Carter was headed to the Dolphins for a tryout this week?

Of course, we know his history with Parcells and drug allegations and that he hasn't played in like four years. If this is true, (and we'll be checking on it today), what does this say about the Dolphins faith in the current trio of QBs vying for the starting job?

Obviously, not much. Sadly, John Beck has struggled mightily and the rook Chad Henne isn't close. Josh McCown seems capable enough but Quincy Carter? Might not be a good locker-room neighbor for a certain running back.

Whatcha think blog nation? What other QBs would you like to see come in and don't give me BF (no, not best friend)? Is Roger Staubach available?

Quincy Carter is in the house

By Ben Volin | Thursday, July 31, 2008, 11:49 AM

Michael Irvin said on his ESPN radio show yesterday that quarterback Quincy Carter would be coming to Miami for a tryout.

Thursday, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano confirmed that Carter, 30, is here in Davie and will be showcasing his talents for the Dolphins’ coaches and management.

“Quincy is here and we will have a workout with Quincy,” Sparano said. “This is just a workout. That’s all it is. It’s a look-see. … Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells will do their due diligence on every player that’s out there, whatever way we can help our football team down the road.”

Carter has not played in the NFL since 2004 with the New York Jets. He was the Cowboys’ starting quarterback from 2001 to 2003, and was cut in Training Camp in part because of a failed drug test.

Carter knows Sparano, Parcells and Ireland from the 2003 Cowboys, which Carter led to the playoffs. He has spent the past two years in the Canadian and Arena leagues.

The Dolphins already have Josh McCown, John Beck and rookie Chad Henne in camp. Sparano said Carter’s tryout is not an indictment on the other three.

“i have been pleased with the three quarterbacks and what they’ve done right now. I think the competition is really good,” Sparano said. “It just means we’ve got to make sure we’re doing our due diligence on players that are available.”

The Dolphins have already cut four players since camp began on Saturday, and Sparano said Parcells and Ireland will continue to look for players that can help the team.

“We’re just going to keep flipping over stones and bringing in a lot of people, and it probably won’t change for two to three years,” Sparano said.

John Beck does not have the mental toughness to be an NFL quarterback...he is proving that in training camp....you cannot be a pansy and play QB in the NFL....he is afraid to stay in the pocket and take a hit to make a throw down the field....that is why he always checks down to the rbs, overthrows (or underthrows) his targets, gets sacked, or throws interceptions.....Beck could throw a million balls in the off-season and look great doing so, but if he is scared to take a hit from the defense during a game, it does not mean shit.  If the guy sucks....he sucks....period!!!! Wink

If Miami even has to CONSIDER THINKING about Quincy Carter, John Beck's days are numbered in Miami....besides, if the new regime thought much of Beck to begin with, they would not have drafted another qb in round 2 of 2008s draft!!

Seriously, Qunicy Carter can beat out beck and McCown. Carter throws a nice deep ball, but is very inaccurate. I told you beck was done and McCown is no better. The dolphins QB situation is a disaster and it only took 3 days of training camp for Parcells to bring in more competition. I'm rooting for Quincy to turn is life around. Qunicy Carter will make this team.

God I hope not...Carter was always godawful...McCown did have a good season with Arizona before Kurt and Matt got there...He has always played for horrible teams...He just needs to manage the game while our power running attack does the rest...Henne will eventually take over the helm and all will be good with Miami again.

I have never been a fan of Josh McCown, but to say that Quincy Carter is better....  May be streching it a bit.  I do hope that Quincy turns his life around, because cocaine addiction is a horrible thing and it has ruined lives around the world.  However, I have my doubts that he'll make this team.

i think this is more an indication of parcells evaluation of beck more than anything else. things don't look too good for beck at this point.

Controversial QB works out for Dolphins

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
Miami Herald

The Dolphins' depth chart at quarterback could be about to take a bizarre twist as the team has decided to give a workout to a controversial player (albeit on a road to recovery) with a history tied to vice president of football operations Bill Parcells.

Quincy Carter, an arena league quarterback who previously started for two NFL teams before his career was marred by drug use, is currently at the team's facility in Davie for a workout. Coach Tony Sparano said it is merely an evaluation.

''This isn't going to change,'' Sparano said. ``We're just going to keep flipping over stones and bringing in a lot of people. It's probably not going to change for two or three years.''

Sparano also emphasized that he's currently pleased with all three quarterbacks currently on the roster, and Carter's workout is not an indication that the team needs to go in a different direction.

''I have been pleased with the quarterbacks, and I think the competition is really good,'' Sparano said. ``It just means we have to make sure we're doing our due diligence on what's available.''

It's not unusual for teams to work out players at multiple positions -- even at positions that are seemingly strong and settled. Nonetheless, Carter's tryout is still intriguing given his past and his ties to Parcells.

Carter was drafted by the Cowboys in 2001, where he started under Parcells during the former Dallas coach's first season on the job in 2003. That season, he led the Cowboys to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance.

''Quincy was athletic,'' Sparano said. ``He could move. He can make some plays that way and keep plays alive. That was important.''

However, making his potential arrival in Miami somewhat strange, he was released by Dallas after the season reportedly as a result of a failed drug test. Carter would face several more setbacks throughout his career, including an arrest on a marijuana charge in 2006. He was again arrested in October 2007 on another marijuana charge.

Carter, 30, most recently joined the Kansas City Brigade after spending four months in a halfway house drug rehabilitation program in Florida that was overseen by Thomas Henderson, a former linebacker for the Cowboys who overcame a drug addiction of his own.

Carter's relationship with Henderson has apparently helped him face his drug issues, and someone in the Dolphins organization (likely Parcells) is apparently willing to also reach out to Carter.

It is unknown what type of role Carter would serve in the team's current quarterback competition if signed, but it is unlikely he would be in the mix to start. Carter's most recent NFL experience came in 2004 with the New York Jets, where he spent just one season.

With the Cowboys, Carter saw his most success under Parcells in 2003, when he completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 3,302 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Dolphins work out former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter

By Omar Kelly
Sun-Sentinel.com

12:06 PM EDT, July 31, 2008

DAVIE - The Dolphins' front office continues to draw on its familiar well, working out former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter today.

Coach Tony Sparano said Carter's tryout has little to do with how the coaches feel about the three quarterbacks in training camp and more to do with management's philosophy of "turning over every stone" in an effort to make the team better.

Carter hasn't played in the NFL since 2004, which was before he was released from Dallas amid allegations of drug use.

Since leaving the Cowboys, Carter, 30, started three games for the New York Jets, followed by failed stints in the CFL and Arena League 2 indoor football league.

"We're just going to keep turning over every stone and trying out a lot of people, and it probably won't change for two or three years," Sparano said.

Carter has played 38 games in his four-year NFL career, completing 56 percent of his passes for 6,337 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Sparano said Carter's familiarity with the offense being installed has a lot to with why the former Georgia standout is getting a look. In Sparano's first season with the Cowboys, Carter was the starting quarterback and led Dallas to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance, throwing 3,302 yards and 17 touchdowns.

"It's just a workout, a look-see. See what's happening," Sparano said. "Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells will do their due diligence on every player that's out there, one way or another to help this football team."

Parcells, the Dolphins director of football operations, inherited Carter in 2003, but released him during the 2004 training camp because of a failed drug test.

Sparano, who coached the offensive line on that Cowboys team, said he remembers Carter, who is 6-foot-2, 212 pounds, as an "intelligent guy, and a pretty good motivator."

If the Dolphins choose to sign Carter, one player from the 80-man training camp roster must be cut, and he'd be sharing reps with Josh McCown, John Beck and rookie Chad Henne, competing for the vacant starting spot.

As far as the Dolphins interest in former Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn, Sparano said nothing has changed from Wednesday.

The Dolphins have acknowledged there's interest in adding Glenn, but are investigating the status of his surgically repaired right knee. Glenn told the Dallas Morning News his interest in playing for the Dolphins is "mutual," but his agent is also fielding calls from other teams.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2008/07/comfort-with-ca.html?cid=124702940#comment-124702940

Comfort with Carter?

Of all the quarterbacks in America looking for work, you're probably wondering out loud why Quincy Carter is getting a tryout for the Dolphins today, aren't you?

Why not Drew Bledsoe, and his cement like feet? Why not bring former Hurricane great Vinny Testaverde out of the old folks home again, just like Carolina did? They have history with Bill Parcells and the Trifecta just like Carter does.

How about some non Trifecta QB's holding up the "will work for food sign" like Jamie Martin, Tim Rattay, or Byron Leftwich. Hell, Daunte Culpepper still loves the Dolphins even though Cam Cameron had him escorted off the practice field, and booted him out of South Florida. He'd still strap it up for this franchise I'm betting.

So why is it Carter and not Culpepper, or Leftwich, or Testeverde, or Martin, or hell, FSU great Chris Weinke (he probably still knows Dan Hennings offense) who is getting this tryout?

Because Carter's familiar to the Trifecta. He's proven to the Trifecta, leading the Cowboys to Parcells' first playoff appearance in Dallas. And most importantly, Carter probably knows this offense being installed just as much, if not better than all three quarterbacks ALREADY in training camp.

Yes he's a has been, AND allegedly a guy who has had his difficulties with substance abuse. But Ricky Williams is too, and he's looking pretty DAMN good out here in Davie, on his fourth or fifth chance. Why doesn't Carter deserve a third?

Talent gives you those opportunities, and it seems the Trifecta is willing to investigate if Carter still has that talent, working him out on a talent-strapped team in need of a few good arms. Hell, one will do!

Think about it. What will it say to you if he comes in here, and after a week or two is moving this offense better than Josh McCown, or John Beck? What will it say to you if Carter's the guy throwing passes before the receivers make their breaks, which is something NONE of the three quarterbacks are doing routinely during team drills.

IF he's signed, and that's a HUGE if, I look at Carter as the litmus test for the two experienced quarterbacks over the next month. I'm not saying Carter should make the 53-man roster or anything crazy like that. But IF he can come in here, OFF THE STREET, and get this stagnant offense moving.... finally.... it'll speak volumes.

I'm sure it won't be saying anything Dolphins fans - especially the pro-Beck, or pro-McCown camp want to hear. But it sure might be something they NEED to hear.

So, what's the beef with the Trifecta digging up OLD players to show this batch of youngsters the way? Do you agree with their approach, or is it the fact they are giving Carter a second change that's the biggest issue?

Deuces.

Because Ricky is actually a valuable asset and a good football player, perhaps?
