Dolphins-Jets headline Week 1

By Edgar Thompson | Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 10:19 PM

In less than a week, the Dolphins season-opener against the Jets has gone from a regional telecast to must-see TV.

Brett Favre vs. Chad Pennington has led CBS to change its plans for Week 1.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who is chairman of the NFL’s Broadcasting Committee, told The Boston Globe that CBS is planning to send its its No. 1 broadcast team to Dolphin Stadium for the Sept. 7 matchup.

Kraft said Favre’s addition to the Jets and Pennington’s move to Miami has improved the AFC East top to bottom.

“He’s one of the few now active players who have more wins than losses [against us], so I hope we can straighten that record out,” Kraft said of Favre, who led the Packers to a win against the Pats in Super Bowl XXXI. “He’s a great, great player. He’s a great competitor.

“I think the Jets got stronger, and I think Miami got stronger getting [Chad] Pennington. I’ve always thought he’s great, and he has the highest completion [percentage] of any NFL quarterback.”

Favre vs. Pennington will be the headline matchup.

But another head-to-head to watch involves No. 1 pick Jake Long out of Michigan against No. 6 pick Vernon Gholston out of Ohio State.

Gholston won the last meeting. During the Buckeyes’ 14-3 victory against the Wolverines, he finished with three sacks, including the only one Long reportedly allowed all season.

Cool. Maybe I'll get to watch it on TV, rather than spending a shitload of money in a bar.

I probably will go to a bar anyway though. Its my birthday.

Far cry from week 13 of last year when the teams combined records were 2-20 and the game was about as irrelevant as a game could get (unless you were trying to figure out next years draft)

Unfortunately, if the Jags are playing at the same time, those of us here in Orlando won't be seeing it.

Yes, the evil jaguars grabbed Orlando TV rights, making it harder to see my beloved Dolphins. I wish nothing but locusts, frogs, hail, darkness, and other biblical plagues upon the damnable Jaguars.
