This is the bottom line on this subject. A wide receiver is a wide receiver. It means that a wide receiver should be able to run "pass" routes whether it is over the middle, a curl route or a go pattern.

The problem is that just like many other industries, America has to have "specialists". There are no more Renaissance people that can do everything within one job description.

Therefore, a wide receivers job is to catch the ball on any type of pattern. It is true that speed guys don't like to go over the middle. You can see it in their play. If this were baseball they would be a DH.

Receivers have it EASIER than they had before 1978. The NFL changed the passing game to GET RECEIVERS OPEN because of bump and run coverage. That meant that once you came off the line of scrimmage past five yards, the defensive back could bump you all over the field and not get called unless it was blatant interference. Pre 1978 rule changes, receivers actually got mauled and knocked down at the line of scrimmage. That is considered holding by the defense in today's NFL.

So receivers learned very quickly how to run precise patterns and fight off defensive backs at the same time.

So if it was like that pre-1978 and now you have receivers that get a PI call even if they are breathed upon, then shouldn't receivers run more crisp patterns now since they don't have the interference that they had in the past? Seems to me that it would be easier to run a 20 yard post route with these NFL rule changes to help the offense over the past 25 years.

Catching the ball is all about desire. It's that simple.

Let me be careful not to let anyone know that I am making a "generalization" or a wicked statement but look at two players...Fred Blinetkoff and Art Monk. These guys didn't have jets in their heals but they could get wide open on any occasion. In Fred's case, it was mad crazy how he would get so wide open. Many times, there wouldn't be a defender in the picture for four yards.

It was because he knew how to run pass patterns to perfection. If it was a ten yard pattern he ran a ten yard pattern, not a 10 1/2 or 11 yard pattern

Now I don't agree with Ginn being on special teams. Keep him at receiver and encourage him to run his patterns right. Let Bess handle the kickoffs and the punts.

I don't think that I've heard many people say "trade Ted Ginn Jr." He shows flashes of being brilliant. Of course he is going to get grilled because he is a first round draft pick. If he was drafted in the 6th round, people would overlook it. All he needs to do is work on his route running and he will be okay.

Route running is what gets you separation in the NFL majority of the time.  Ginn in college got by on physical ability & did not have to work on route running.  Its something he is having to learn to do while on the job.  Many of a college Wr does when they arrive in the NFL & that is why the 3rd Yr rule is talked about for Wr in the NFL.

Please put all the remarks about "generalizations" and how they relate to rascism in the thread started in the off-topic forum.

Thank you Dphins4me for starting that thread in order to keep this one about Bouoniconti/Ginn

nfln just did a segment on ginn route running from the jets game. nothing we all didn't already know, but watching film exclusively on ginn, just highlights his inability to get off the bump at the line. many times in the game, chad was looking directly at him as a first option, but ginn just couldn't beat the bump off the line.

the phins oc was trying everything too... they started putting ginn in motion to get him some space and still couldn't get off of the initial bump off of the line. it was pretty pathetic... right now the problem with ginn is a physical one more than anything else.
