After watching that game for a second time (I tiVo'd it), I think that there were two reasons we dominated in the manner that we did.

1.  Cassell didn't even try to stretch the D.  Apart from the lucky catch by Welker, all his throws were within 15 yards - most within 10.  This kept the safeties up tight to help with run support, and allowed the corners to be in close to the line as well.  By not stretching the D, Miami was able to blitz more often (although they did get significant pressure with only four rushers).

2.  The NE LB's were jumping the shallow routes.  My guess is that they didn't respect our WR's, or Pennington's arm (with some reason).  As a result, they were jumping the shallow dump off/outlet routes and allowing our TE's and WR's to slip behind them for uncontested catches.

These two things say to me that Sparano (and his coaches) are better game planners than our last few coaches.  Here's hoping they can put something good together against San Diego.

I think the big problem with 1) is that Cassel doesn't have the ability to stretch the field. He was *this* close to being cut in the pre-season, I don't think he has the capabilities.

It doesn't matter why - whether receivers or ability.  Fact is there was no room because he couldn't keep the safeties honest.
