DAVIE - On a sad note, Dolphins outside linebackers coach Jim Reid was undergoing an undisclosed surgery Thursday and will be out indefinitely.
Reid, 57, was taken to an area hospital via ambulance after feeling dizzy following a 10-minute run on Wednesday.
Sparano said that defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni a former linebacker at Penn State and linebackers coach with the Cowboys will take over Reid's duties.
"What I do know is Jim is in surgery right now,'' Sparano said. "It's a personal matter between him and his family."
Under Reid's supervision, Matt Roth has made a seamless transition from defensive end to strongside linebacker while outside linebacker Joey Porter has returned to his Pro Bowl form with four sacks in three games.
"Jim has done a tremendous job with those guys,'' Sparano said. "It's an interesting room with those guys, taking a few defensive linemen turning them into linebackers and the move with Joey from one side to the other side. He really started as a [strong side linebacker] and now he's playing [weak side linebacker], that's a pretty tough transition. I thought Jim did a tremendous job getting his guys ready every week.''
Before being hired last January, Reid coached a rebuilding Virginia Military Institute to a 3-19 record the last two years. As coach of University of Massachusetts from 1986-91 he compiled a 36-29-1 mark. His job with the Dolphins was his first in the NFL after 34 years as a coach.
Backup outside linebacker Quentin Moses said they're all praying for Reid's recovery.
"He's a great mentor,'' Moses said. "He's our positions coach so him not being here takes a toll on all of us. We're just trying to keep him in our prayers right now. He's definitely made an impact on us.''
