On my lunch break yesterday I bought a game for the 360.  When I got back to work I noticed that the game had been on sale and they charged me full price, so I decided to pop back in today and have them credit me the amount that should have been deducted.

While standing in line I witnessed something that really made me scratch my head.

There was a guy that was returning a piece of equipment.  I'm not exactly sure what it was, but it was something that required a USB cord to do some kind of function.  The machine doesn't come with a USB cord, you need to buy it seperately.  But it should have a cord to plug it in and power it up.  The power cord was missing.  There was also a software CD that was supposed to be included, that was missing as well.

I could hear the guy's reason for returning it loud and clear:  The cord to plug the machine in was missing, as was the software CD needed to use the equipment.  "How do I get electricity to the machine?" He kept asking.

The guy couldn't have been more clear.  At one point Best Buy had four people surrounding him trying to tell him "this doesn't come with cords, you can't return it for that reason."  I don't know how many times he said "I know it doesn't come with a USB cord.  I need a power cord."  Finally, obviously very frustrated, he pulled the unit out of the box along with some paper work and basically screamed "someone plug this thing in!"  So they went to plug it in.  No cord.

I shit you not, one of the employees looks at the guy and says "where is the power cord?"

By now there were maybe five of us waiting in line and we're all kind of looking at our feet, trying to act like we weren't listening - it was very awkward.  All the sudden from behind me I hear a little lady who must have been 60 pipe out "what FUCKING CORD do you think he's been trying to point out to you assholes?  Give him his money back so we can all get on with our lives!"

Yeah.  I don't know if the $6.10 I saved on the overcharged game was worth all that!   Shocked

But the point remains - this poor guy had to fight tooth and nail to return something and his reason for returning it was very valid.  You don't buy a TV or a DVD player without it coming complete with a cord to plug it in to the wall!  This thing, whatever it was, doesn't run on little mice running on wheels stored inside it!

What happened to the art of listening to your customer?  I don't buy a lot of things from Best Buy, games mostly, but that interaction certainly will make me second guess spending on a "big ticket" item.

That was painful!

Maine edit to make post more clear.

The only kind of human interaction more awkward than that between an angry/frustrated customer and an absent-minded retailer is the interaction between the suspicious policeman and the innocent civilian.

That's hilarious.

To play devil's advocate, the customer service person probably thought he meant the USB cord or something to connect the device to a computer, not a power cord.  I did, when I was first reading your message.  ...just a misunderstanding.

You also have the problem of people being idiots (on both the customer and the service end).  You can't ever take anybody's word for anything, because most customers don't know the difference between a USB cord and a power cord, and most customer service people are hacks making close to minumum wage.

The idiots at the desk were clearly not even listening to the customer.

My dad, who was in sales, always used to say: "The customer is not always right, the customer is always SATISFIED."  I believe this to be true.

Dave - I certainly didn't hear the beginning of the guy's conversation with the clerk, I was reading the back of my game and didn't even care at that time.  But I did specifically hear him say "no, not the USB cord.  The unit is missing the power cord, what you plug into the wall."  He couldn't have been more clear as to what was missing from the box.  I started to feel like he was on MTV's "Boiling Point" - I was ready for people to come out and give him money for not hitting anyone!

Except for the profanity, I wish more people were like her.

Yeah - hearing that little old lady toss in an F bomb wasn't anything I needed to make a peaceful lunch break.

I'm like "oooooooooookay, Jerry Springer show!  Welcome to Maine!"

I love it. Without seeing the lady I have this mental picture that can't be beat. I love hearing people drop the F bomb when you don't expect it.

My bad - he explained exactly what was missing very well.  I didn't do a great job of explaining that.  I edited the post to reflect it, it was confusing at first.

I guess not!  Which is weird because I always thought you could power with a USB.  I know I can on my blackberry.  My iPod charges with one, as will my camcorder.

Whatever this guy was buying had a separate cord.  I'm not sure what the USB did on it.  Frankly I was afraid to talk to any of the employees after the guy stormed off!

It is possible to power stuff off USB, but the USB 2.0 specification only requires it to handle 500mA loads. That's not a lot. You couldn't run a printer, for example, on that.

I hate when you buy something that needs a USB cord & they do not provide the dang thing with the product.  Charge me extra & include it.  I cannot tell you how many times I've had to make a trip back to the store because I've forgotten the dang thing.

I have a drawer full of USB cords. How many do you need?  Grin
