my feeling is that the spread/wildcat/wildhog/whatever the f, will become a standard piece of an nfl offensive playbook, and not from a purely gimmick perspective. its not a novelty act, and it will be deployed more than people think as part of a "base" offense.
it's no secret that urban meyer and belichick are close friends, and for good reason. these guys have strategic football minds beyond the rest of their peers. there was a lot of talk that the pats would pounce on pat white this year in the draft, and i think if presented with an opportunity, bill would grab tebow next year in a heartbeat.
this game really just breaks down into individual matchups. it doesn't matter if you have the greatest qb in the world for a particular play, if the defense has the play matched up just right, you are going to have a hard time consistently converting. cassel is by no means tom brady, but he started to become real effective in that offense because of the matchup problems the pats skill players pose for defenses.
i don't think folks should be so surprised to see the patriots roll out a spread option attack this year. i dunno who could run that right now (welker?), but the person that the spread option was tailor made for is currently available to any team as a free agent at a discount rate.
