While I know it's technically correct to call 2 straight wins against another team in a 2 game set a sweep, does anyone else feel like it cheapens the term?

When I think of a sweep, I think of a team winning 3 straight (or more) against another team, which, because it is much less probable than other outcomes, deserves its own term of art. A two game "sweep" to me sounds like it deserves another term, like, "double-up" or something.

When I think of sweep, I automatically think of a 3 or 4 game sweep...but I don't have any problem with the term sweep being used for two game series.

2 games does sound a little cheap, but I think it has more to do with how many games are in a specific series.

If it only happens to be a 2 game series, so be it.  At the same time, winning 3 consecutive games in a 4 game series, I don't consider a 3 game sweep.

Sweep means you win all the games in the series.  If its a 2 game set and you win them both, its a sweep, although i'd be surprised to hear anyone brag about a 2-game sweep.

Seriously though, although a two game set may technically be a sweep, I usually consider 3 or more games a sweep.

I have to agree with the group here. It is technically a sweep but I don't think I would ever use that terminology for two games.

Why not?  Two games (not adjacent to each other) is all it takes to sweep in football.  Dolphins swept the Bills.

Yeah.

In baseball, it has to do specifically with consecutive games.  In football, it's a season sweep.  It's a different animal.

I must concur.  A sweep needs to involve at least 3 games.  Otherwise it amounts to taking both games of a doubleheader and I don't ever remember seeing brooms out for that.
