I like conservative play calling.  I'm also not the kind of guy who bitches about play calls.  I don't, however, understand, why we're running on 3rd and long when we're in field goal range already.

Against the Colts, it happened twice.  The first time, I defended it, thinking that, from the dirt, every yard counted.  When we did it a 2nd time, then much closer, I was confused.

...and we did it against the Chargers, as well.  We ran on 3rd and 5, from the 5.  It just seems like you're giving the TD opportunity away.

Can someone enlighten me on the strategy behind this?

We had the ball in roughly the same position twice. Once we called a pass and once we called a run. I don;t think this is really an area of concern except neither play worked and we kicked a FG twice.

Modified to add that I don't consider 3rd and 4 a long yardage situation.

While I don't always agree with this play calling here is some of the logic behind it....

1. Would a 15 yard sack put you out of FG range?

2. What defensive is the other team showing?  Pure pass defense?  Maybe running would be a better option.

3. What is your best strength as an offense?  Your running back?  Or do you have all pro QB and WRs?

No, not on the 5 yard line.

The defense was showing a stacked line.

The only logic I can see running is if it's a spread formation and you run a draw play.  That might catch them off guard.

Let's not forget the fear of the pick in the red zone...I think the Dolphins have been content to kick figgies rather than go for the end zone, figurind the defense would do its job.  Sadly...this has not been the case.
