Sources: Pennington has torn shoulder

ESPN.com news services

Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has been initially diagnosed with a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and the Dolphins expect him to miss the rest of the season, sources familiar with the injury he suffered Sunday told ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen.

Pennington will seek a second opinion from orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews, who has performed two shoulder surgeries on the quarterback.

Pennington underwent tests Monday on his right shoulder, which he hurt early in the third quarter of Sunday's 23-13 loss at San Diego. He missed the rest of the game, and coach Tony Sparano said he didn't know how long Pennington will be sidelined.

Graham ESPN.com's Tim Graham writes about all things AFC East in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Pennington has already had surgery on the same shoulder in 2004 and 2005.

Chad Henne, who went 10 for 19 for 92 yards with an interception, will likely make his first NFL start Sunday when the winless Dolphins play host to Buffalo.

"We're going to have to go out there with Henne, who is a lot less experienced," tight end Anthony Fasano said. "There is definitely going to be a learning curve for Henne. He can learn as much as he wants in a classroom, but until he's out on the field, in-game experience he's not going to learn.

"But we have a lot of faith in Chad. He's a smart guy, a great leader and fun to play with. We're just going to have to move on."

A second-round draft choice in 2008, Henne has been considered Pennington's heir apparent for more than a year. The challenge for the offense will be to develop a chemistry with Henne, receiver Greg Camarillo said.

"Chad [Pennington] is our leader," Camarillo said. "Any injury to him is an injury to our offense. But it's also an opportunity for Henne to step up. We've got faith in his quarterbacking abilities. It's time for him to show it off."

The score was 3-all when Pennington was hurt on a hit by linebacker Kevin Burnett as he threw a pass. The injury appeared to occur with the contact, which caught Pennington in an awkward position, rather than when he hit the ground, Sparano said.

"Kind of a weird-looking deal," Sparano said.

Linebacker Joey Porter, nursing a sore right hamstring, also was unable to finish the game because the muscle tightened. Sparano said Porter will be further evaluated this week.

The injuries are another blow for a team rapidly regressing after a great leap forward in 2008, when the Dolphins improved their victory total by 10 games and won the AFC East. Now they're 0-3, and only three teams since 1990 have gone to the playoffs after such a slow start.

Sparano said lineup changes are possible.

"I told this team yesterday, it's not OK to be 0-3," he said. "It's not acceptable. If there's a place where we can shake some things up, we will."

Information ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen and from The Associated Press was used in this report.

With the beating that shoulder has taken, it wouldn't be far fetched to say that his career may be over.

In some ways this might not be has horrible as it seems.  If Penny was healthy with the team at 0-3 the team would have had QB controversy.  Start the QB that gives the team the best chance to win on Sunday (Penny) or start the rookie to give him experince for next year, basically conceeding the year.  Now the team can start Henne and sidestep the whole are you conceeding the year question.

Yeah it's hard to come back from a 3rd shoulder surgery on the same shoulder.

Enter the Chad Henne era. Is he the 15th or 16th QB since Marino?

His season isn't just over, his career may be done as well.  That shoulder has been through the ringer in his career.

As for Henne, no better time than now.  He's had a year to sit and learn, now it's time for him to grab ahold of this offense and be the make the most of his opportunity.

Unfortunate.  I really like Chad Pennington.  He's smart, has great instincts, and accurate and protects the football.

Maybe he can teach the kid a thing or two before he rides off into the sunset.

Ok so that just confirmed the no playoff season really, tell Henne the team is his now there's no pressure and get ready for next season.

My concern is that he doesn't really have the weaponry to succeed.

Sorry to hear about Chad P. He was a class act and I think that he has seen his last days as a QB. Ironically, it ended against a team that he had complete mastery over, the Chargers.

Chad Henne? I don't know but I've got Earl Morralls' phone number just in case he's available.

I would love to see Pat White get some work as well.

Please no way. Don't even bring that up.  Why would you even say that?  Was it the way he looked like he was peeeing on himself for those 4 plays he has been in on?  They didn't prepare him to play in the offseason so it wouldn't be anything other than another Beck debacle.

I bet they pick up someone else before they let White play straight up QB.

I Feel like,as long as people don't expect us to hand the ball to Henne, and say go wing the ball 50 times, and win us a ball game....Henne will do ok....I love the idea,of a passing game, where we might actually attempt a pass over 20 yards, that's not a trick play...I liked Pennington's leadership.(in hindsight) he was just what we needed last year, but the offense has had 0 big plays this year....I wish Chad Pennington well in whatever he decides, but I'm excited at the opportunity for this offense get better....

How about Vinny Testerverde?  Roll Eyes

This will either be a great thing for the Dolphins or a really bad thing. Either way we will know how we sit for QB for our near future .  Time to shit or get off the Pot Henne!

As for Chad.....Thanks for a Great season last year. You brought a smile to my face that hasn't been seen in a long while. Best of luck in retirement.
