White is really looking like a wasted pick at this point. His best chance at this point seems to be to bulk up a little bit and become a receiver/running back in the Antwaan Randle El mold. He's actually taller than Randle El, but I have no idea if he can catch the ball worth a damn. Like Randle El, he could throw a pass once or twice a season...

I truly understand your thinking, but I am going to use my psychic powers and disagree.  My crystal ball tells me that Pat White is being held back intentionally and he will soon be unleashed.  In a hard to see way, I think he is being asked to do more (in preparation) than nearly any other rookie QB in the last few years.

Think about it.  They are installing an offense with White that is supposed to be the ultimate balance between scrambling, passing and option.  The apparent goal would be to have an offensive package that is nearly impossible to predict and would require perfect defensive discipline to be stopped.  This has never been done before and if it fails it may never be done again.  I believe the pass will be the last step in the progression of White, but I think it is coming soon.

Why is it coming soon?  Now that Brown is out and Ricky is limited, White may give us our best chance to win.  Sure the coaches would love to see what they have but don't think for a minute they aren't out there to win each game.  We have seen what our passing game is capable of this year with a non-mobile QB, don't be surprised to see a major shift toward Pat White within the next two weeks.

So you're predicting that Sparano et. al. will ditch Henne in favor of a rookie quarterback with far worse skill and mechanics -- and who looks absolutely petrified every time he has the ball?

I have to admit...I am a little concerned with Pat White as well. I am just not as convinced as Doc is about White being the centerpiece of Parcells' grand offensive design.

I find it hilarious that people think Pat White is a better QB than John Beck was in 2007

Depends on your definition of "ditch".  I definitaly don't see Henne being removed from play totally except for the outside chance of the final game of the season.  But if you would consider "ditch" to mean 50/50 ish, than yes I can see that happening.

BTW, I am not comparing White to Beck.  White would be used in a completely different manner than Beck.  If White is in the game, don't expect anything he does to resemble a normal QB role.  I just think our coaching staff is slick about stuff like this.  Based on what I have seen of Sparano, something big is coming and he is waiting for the right time.  I think the time will be here very soon.

I wasn't referring to you.  I was more directing that towards people who saw a "deer in headlights" look in Beck after 2 games, and haven't said a word about White with respect to the same.

Two reasons for that, Brian...

1) DESPITE being 100% totally right on every comment I ever made on Beck, I took so much grief from the whiny-ass "All we are saying, is give Beck a chance" congregation (you know who you are... Wink ) that I am hesitant to go down that road again...

2) Because, unlike Beck, White hasn't taken enough snaps for "anyone" to accurately gauge his prospects.

Why do we have to compare White & Beck? Just because I know Beck sucked, he doesn't have to be in this conversation. This is about Pat White, not John Beck. I just have a hard time saying bad things about Pat given what he did at WVU the past four years, but I alway said I didn't think he would make it as an NFL QB.

Running QB's in college make terrible QB's in NFL.  True story.

I brought up John Beck because after one game many people have seen enough.  I am wondering why Pat White is getting more slack.

I agree with FYO about White bulking up and moving to RB/WR. In fact, when he was drafted, I remember predicting to Lil B and Brian (via IM) that he would be converted to RB, in order to run the wildcat.

I thought I read during training camp that he was being listed with the WR's.  But, after the list of WR talent got excessive and no 3rd QB emerged, I think he got moved back...

The organization always said he was a QB only from what I remember. You may have read it somewhere, but official word from the team was he was always a QB.

Perhaps this will prove to be true, however I would recommend that you wait until after preseason next year to feel convicted about this.  As far as I can recall, we have only seen him throw one real pass (barring some junk time in preseason).  He may have snuck in a pass when I wasn't paying full attention.

I am predicting that the coaches will call on him to start passing soon, but if I am wrong and it doesn't happen this season I will be looking at what he does next preseason.  By that point, if he appears to be severely lacking at passing proficiency I would start feeling convicted that he needs to be listed and used as something other than a QB.

This is likely what they are asking Pat White to do...

First, he must read the defense and make the proper check if necessary.  He must determine whether the play should be run as a pass, run, sneak or option.  After that he has to be able to run the play effectively.  All of this must be learned and worked on in a secondary manner to what is happening with Henne (and Pennington before him).  It sounds simple, but most young QBs are working on Pass and Run with a single (and simple) audible option between the two.

Now lets look at his progression...

First, he appeared to be given no option to change the play before the snap.  He simply was used to hand off (and had one experimental deep play).  Then he was given a second option to sneak the ball.  Next, he appeared to be given a combonation of the ability to call a simple audible (not including pass) in which he could hand off, sneak, or run the option.  This is where he is now.  The next step will be to give him a few pass plays that he can check too.  Once this happens, he can run, sneak, run option or pass.  This is when he will start to become dangerous.  Keep in mind that he will a significant lack of variability in each of those categories, but the fact that he can do so many different things alone will be all a defense can handle.

One final point...

Do you really think that this coaching staff has more faith in Ronnie and Ricky throwing the ball than Pat White?  I assure you the answer is no.  From what I have seen, this is the way Sparano works.  He does not experiment on the field (although he likes to make you think he does).  He wants to see it in practice and he wants to see it done right.  The Ronnie and Ricky pass packages were likely installed well before White was on the team and have been practiced ever since.  Furthermore, White has not fully been established as a significant running threat.  Don't forget he is not a running back and will likely never be established as a significant running threat until he starts passing the ball.

Sorry for the long post, it was the only way I thought I could get the points across without confusion.

Its unfair to rail on John Beck. He has no shot of success in Miami. I think Beck is still a good prospect with the right team.

Pat White needs to get into the weight room and he'll be fine.

A team where their opponent doesn't rush the passer sounds like a good fit...

(Sorry, last shot at Beck, I swear)
