Nobody cares after New England won more games in their year then Miami did. The 'record' has already been broken as far as I'm concerned. Maybe we should have the 72 fins come back and play 2 more games and see if they can win them both.

Okay DB, you're not making sense. It's all about the "0" in the last game. Whether it's a 14 game season or 16 game season, its about the "0".

The 72 Dolphins had to go to a rowdy Three Rivers Stadium to play the Steelers in the 72 AFC Championship Game. That atmosphere was complete bedlam and they won. The Dolphins were not picked to win Super Bowl 7.

A team with a perfect record in the NFL is going to be home all through the playoffs. That wasn't the case with the 72 Dolphins. The AFC/NFC championship games rotated each year and the lot fell on the AFC Central division.

It's a rare occurrence to go undefeated, but it's going to happen. There has been an undefeated run pretty much every year this decade by the Colts or Saints or Pats or Titans or whomever. It will happen eventually, and then the 1972 team won't be original anymore.

Dolphins fans care because it is their gold standard - the only thing that makes them unique and different. Once that goes away, the cold hard reality will set in that the team hasn't done shit in almost 40 years. That's about as bad as the Detroit Lions or the Cleveland Browns.

Wow you must really be hard up to be trolling this bad. Just man up and go out and get a hooker to rub one out for you and spare us all your pent up angst over your crappy team choking and your hatred of all things female. Thanks.

The people in this thread making the biggest noise about going undefeated:

jtex316 - Giants' fan
Denver_Bronco - Broncos' fan

If you stop talking about it, it wouldn't be talked about.  You guys keep bringing it up, not us.

Back to the topic at hand,  I care about the '72 season as well.  Even though it was well before my time, it's something to be proud of for you team to accomplish.

So that's why the Dolphins had to go on the road with a better record.  I've been trying to figure out why the Dolphins had to play in Pitt despite having a better record.  So there was no Home Field Advantage throughout the playoffs back then.

Maybe or maybe not.

But the '72 Dolphins hold another record that is certain to never be broken, no team has ever had a weaker SOS than that team, and the way the schedules are done nowadays it is almost impossible for anyteam to even come close.

Or the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, or Tennessee Titans.  And all of those teams have less Super Bowl wins than Miami.

But none of those teams (or any of the other unlisted teams) have an undefeated championship season.

Wrong.

[Miami's] opponents were 70-122, a .367 percentage that was topped only by the 1975 Minnesota Vikings and the 1999 St. Louis Rams.
Funny how you don't see people complain about the win .pct of the teams that the Greatest Show on Turf beat.

just to follow up on that rotation:

In those days, the sites of the conference championship games were part of a rotation system among the three divisions and not tied to regular season records. The AFC East had been the host in 1971, and the Dolphins played at home. In 1972, it was the AFC Central and so the game was at Three Rivers Stadium.

......and still, the only Undefeated Team in the history of the NFL, the 1972 Miami Dolphins!

If you got to the AFC Championship before they changed the format in 1975, home field didn't mean much:

"At the end of each football season, a series of playoff games involving the top six teams in the AFC are conducted, consisting of the four division champions and two wild card teams. The two teams remaining play in the AFC Championship game.

Since the 1975-76 season, the site of the AFC Championship has been based on playoff seeding. The surviving club with the highest initial seeding in the playoffs hosts the game. A wild card team can not host the game unless both participants are wild cards. Before 1975-76, the site of the game was determined on a rotating basis."

Where is fyo, our numbers cruncher? What I would like to see is the beginning of the year SOS average and then the final SOS average for this season concerning the Dolphins.

I care about it to a degree. I'm didn't  root for the Jaguars vs the Colts just because of the undefeated season. I rooted for the Colts because at the time, a Colts win over Jax helped Miami with the playoff picture.
