^^^Fau , you'd be OK with an employer asking this of you?  Or about some other family secret?

short answer, yes

long answer is that government agencies and large companies do much more invasive checks than this

Here is an apology by Irlend:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Dolphins-GM-apologizes-for-asking-if-Dez-Bryant-mother-was-a-prostitute?GT1=39002

I can't answer this question 100% honestly here so I won't. All I will say is that I agree that Irlend is an asshole.  but maybe its about time we got an asshole to run the show?  One that actually puts the Team first above all else.  Roll Eyes

I think when A Team is thinking of investing dozens of millions inyou you STFU and answer.

I love the way everyone is skriting the truth.  They are not saying she didn't smoke a meat pole or two for money , just that he never should have asked.

Is this problem specifically with Ireland, is it a problem with the NFL, or is it not a problem?

I don't think that's an appropriate question for a job interview, but at the same time, you want to have character guys around you.  You aren't your family, but I'm guessing by the numbers, that children of drug dealing hookers might not be the most adjusted mentally.

Still, I don't think it's something you ask point-blank like that.

When trying to obtain a top-secret security clearance to work aboard a nuclear sub, I was asked a lot worse questions that this regarding some of my family members, and their "involvements" in certain things. I was even asked certain questions about extended family members whom I didn't even know!

When I was cleared for a TS Umbra security clearance in the Army, they asked me a lot of distasteful questions about my family...and myself.  They also went around my hometown and asked a lot of the same questions of my friends and family.

I didn't get pissed off...I just figured that Uncle Sugar was doing his due diligence before giving me sensitive secrets to hold.

Top secret security clearance for the military is a zillion miles away from playing in the NFL.

National Security and playing football are two very different things, though.  I guess I'm just a priss on this matter...

I also wasn't being paid millions of dollars for merely having my name called at the draft.

They also made the phone calls and had the conversations with my friends, family, and random people in my town.

There is more than one way to ask the question.

"So it it true your mother is a crack ho?" is one way.

Other ways to ask the same thing, but generally considered more acceptable would include....

"what did your mother do for employment?"

"how did your family earn income?"

"Do you know anyone who does drugs?"  follow up "who?"

"Do you know anyone who is a prostitute?"  follow up "who?"

"What is your relationship with your biologial father?"  "What do you know about him?"

True, but how does the fact your mother may have been a prostitute when she was young have anything to do with wether you can catch a ball?
Was someone going to use the information to get you to throw the SB? Comparing the process to be granted  a Top Secret or higher clearance and the process to become an NFL reciever is comparing apples to horseshit.

The NFL and the military aren't the same, but the goal of the interview is the same:  Does the interviewee have the character and background to be trusted with your very precious asset?

And it's not just the salary that is lost.  If the player busts, many, many more millions will be lost because of lost revenue from other sources.

People could come out of the wood work, when you come into money,What if someone comes out saying they're his father, and paid his mom to sleep with him...Now he wants to be reunited.(It can be a total B.S.,but can cause him to be distracted)..What if a Reporter asks him about his past, and he gets offended and punches the reporter....If it's that touchy of an issue,it can explode into a PR nightmare..There are lots of scenerios,It's covering all your bases...Didn't we learn anything from Ben Rothlisberger? The Team gets fined if He screws up,and Charges don't have to be involved...How combfortable are you handing someone a Multi year, multi million dollar contract....

When did the NFL become so pussified that this is such an issue?  I could really care less is Ireland asked if Dez's mom was a whore.

Last I saw, Dez Bryant is a 6'2" 215 pound man.  There's nothing "pussified" about that, Tenshot.  This was asked of a man undergoing a job interview, is all.  Some of us object to that type of question, some of you don't.  Trust me, it has nothing to do with being "pussified".
