The problem that I have with Pat White doesn't stop at his passing. I saw nothing in him last year that convinced me he can run the ball effectively either. He had what 1 run that resulted in more than about 3 yards and how many runs that gained negative yardage? I'd be willing to cut him a little slack if he showed me he could at least be a running threat.
I don't think they really knew how to use Pat White last year. I would say about 90% of his runs were up the middle, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I know that the next thought will be that one of his outside runs resulted in a concussion but I am not so worried about that; he will learn to take it out of bounds in that situation in the future.
I think this option thing can actually work if the O-line could just hold a block like they are supposed to. I think he had an option play in one of the Patriots games that he was hit almost as he caught the ball on the snap and in trying to get the ball to the option player it resulted in a fumble situation. But if you look at most of the option plays, they actually resulted in a few touchdowns and his long run that you are referring to.
Finally, he was part of several red zone plays that resulted in touchdowns. I will grant you that Ricky and Ronnie did the ball handling, but White did seem to draw a great deal of the defenders attention on those plays.
I would love to know what audibles he was allowed to make. It looked like he was given an option on nearly every play and he almost always checked off to a handoff up the middle or keeper up the middle. I am curious how many of his pre-play reads (if any) were considered correct by the coaches.
