http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100726&content_id=12663932&vkey=news_fla&fext=.jsp&c_id=fla

On the heels of Kendry Morales' season-ending leg injury after hitting a walk-off home run, Chris Coghlan hits the DL with a torn meniscus in his knee after giving Wes Helms the old shaving cream pie in the face.

Here's the part that gets me...

Quote
"Rodriguez said the team addressed excessive celebrating and there will not be any more shaving-cream pie rituals."

Ever since I was a kid watching This Week in Baseball, they had segments about guys getting a pie in the face during interviews.  This is a tradition in baseball, and has been going on for years.  And now we have to stop it?

Just last weekend, we went to a game, and they showed a pie-in-the-face montage on the big screen featuring Cody Ross and Chris Coghlan, and I remarked "these guys look like they're having FUN out there..."

So, is this the pussification of baseball?

Honestly, I've been waiting for a football player to go down after some of those jump/bump celebrations but it appears to be hitting baseball instead. If I was a coach I wouldn't allow it either. Just give an elbow bump, high five, butt slap, anything except leaving your feet to celebrate.

I think it's a retarded tradition (the whole "rush the field and jump up and down at home plate" business). It's ONE GAME. There's 161 games left. Chill the F out.

This just in,from the commissioner's office....
Baseball players aren't allowed to touch each other at all, as a player was just sprained his wrist, patting a team mate on the back side....

Bro, you'll never understand.  Its the spirit of competition.  With your attitude, why bother playing at all?

They should ban having champagne in the clubhouse/locker room after teams win the championship, superbowl, world series, etc one of those flying corks could poke someones eye out.   Roll Eyes

Jezz, life happens.  People get injured. Every year couple of Americans die in vending machine accidents, even more get injured.  Are we gonna get rid of vending machines too?

^^^No, but places have in some cases bolted them against the wall. I liken that to the steps taken more than outright banning them. The Marlins didn't say don't celebrate (take the machine away) they said quit jumping in the air to celebrate (use the machine correctly and don't tilt it over).

OK, they did ban the shaving cream. That may be a little too far, but given what players do to avoid getting hit in the face with it, I don't blame the front office at all. Players have plenty of things banned from them. I get your point, but what most of you are missing is the fact that the Marlins now have lost a player because of rough housing. If I was in management there is no excuse for players going on the DL for horse play. Too much is at stake.

No rough housing, no horseplay, spit out your gum, sit up straight.  What is this middle school social studies class?

If a player gets injured playing tag with his 5 year old are we going to ban parenting?

If a player falls of a chair changing a light bulb at home, will team rules now require players hire an electrician instead?

What you are missing is that what he was doing is not inherently dangerous.  And certainly less dangerous than playing the sport of baseball.  I am not saying it is okay for players to ride a motorcycle w/o a helmet.  But if someone gets hurt in a freak accident in something not particularly dangerous, it is a knee jerk overreaction to ban something because one person got hurt.

One person on this team was injured by celebration. Many other athletes have been hurt historically. Like I said, fist bump, give an elbow, slap his butt, anything but horseplay is OK. Act like you have won a game before. Like jtex said, there are only 161 others during the course of a season.

So if its the playoffs and you just won Game 7 of the NLCS, you think these guys are going to just slap a guy's butt and walk off the field?

It shouldn't matter what game it is.  Every game is just as important as game 7 of the World series to these guys.

I watched a video the other day on the NBA finals. I think it was the 1969-1970 NBA finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. It was game 7 and the Celtics beat the Lakers to win again. Jerry West won the Finals MVP, the first year that the finals MVP was awarded to a player. (and I also believe the only time the Finals MVP was awarded to a losing team's player).

Anyways, the game ended, the Boston Celtics had won the title, and the Lakers had just lost the title as the buzzer sounded. You know what happened? Both teams jogged calmly into the locker room area, amidst very few hugs and hi-fives. And, that was that.

Compare that to some fat schlep like Prince Fielder hitting a home run to end the game against the lowly Pirates in game 73 of the season when the Brewers are barely above .500 themselves, while having 200 people jumping up and down at home plate and then doing a whole host of post-game celebratory garbage (pie in the face, curtain calls, laps around the ball park, etc...)

I like the Boston / LA celebration.

While I can respect the "act like you have been there before" approach.  I do enjoy the Chad Ochocinco style TD dances as well.  And feel that the banning of them was a stupid move on the part of the no fun league.

(As for time wasting.  There is a 45 second clock and the team must within 45 seconds of the team scoring a TD that team must be ready to attempt a PAT or 2 point conversion.  If the celebrants are not back at the sideline or in position to play the down will be assessed with delay of game or 12 men on the field penalty)

Raven Training Camp Canceled.

Baltimore – HNN -- This morning Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced that the team would suspend all of training camp in light of the injury to Domonique Foxworth. After Foxworth’s injury yesterday,  Harbough, President Dick Cass and General Manager Ozzi Newsome had meeting to discuss the growing problem of players being injured during practices.  Particularly problematic was that the injury was quite freakish and occurred while Foxworth was doing during a drill he says “he has performed a million times.”

After a long discussion the three of them decided that regardless of the value that training camp provides in terms of team comradely and working at as a cohesive group, the best course of action would to simply cancel all practices.  Harbough cited the Marlins recent decision to ban all celebratory activity as an effort to curb team injuries as the inspiration for this decision.
