Dolphins scrap plan to work Pennington into mix slowly

The plan was for Chad Pennington to be the team's No. 3 quarterback and possibly start the year on the physically-unable-to-perform list.  That plan is long gone.

Pennington has come out of the gates swinging in training camp, taking his turn with the No. 2 offense and reportedly looking sharp.  According to coach Tony Sparano, Pennington "had a revelation" a few days ago that confirmed his shoulder is 100%.

The Dolphins coach confirmed at the outset of camp that Pennington would compete with Tyler Thigpen for the team's backup job.  If Pennington is healthy, it's hard to imagine Thigpen winning out.

We'd guess that Thigpen could now be available in a possible trade, although Pat White's cloudy future makes things more complicated. Either way, Pennington has progressed quicker than expected from what many thought could have been career-ending shoulder surgery. 

We think Chad Henne is going to be a very good NFL starter, but Pennington's healthy presence will put more pressure on him to win this year.

His passes were weak and high-arching, and took longer to reach the receivers than other QB's.  A recipe for pick-6. 

I am not a coach, or a scout, so what do I know, but from what I've seen Pennington has a long way to go to come back.

Well, while wearing ugly pastels Henne has 2 and Pennington has 3 (2 regular season, 1 post season).  I have no idea how many Pennington has while wearing puke green, I am going to assume it is more than 1.

Well playing for the dolphins, henne has 3 in 463 pass attempts and pennington has 3 in 588 pass attempts in dolphins uniforms, and 8 total in 2685 attempts.

I've seen a few, and they're floaters. 

Career numbers don't tell you any story here.

It might be noted that all three of Henne's pick 6s occurred in or before his fourth game as a starting QB and he did not throw one in his 10 most recent starts.  He threw 3 pick 6's in his first 136 attempts and then not one in 327 attempts since.  Some folks might consider that a bit relevant when evaluating the growth of a young QB.

But as Tepop said career it looks like it is 8 to 3.
