So... it finally happened. The Jets and Revis reached an agreement. Reports are that it's a 7-year deal for some big amount, but that the final 3 years are voidable and essentially fake, added to boost the contract appearance.

The real meat is 4 years, $46 million ($32 million guaranteed) making him the second-highest paid cornerback in the league, as far as I can tell. Asomugha got just over $15 million a year, Dunta Robinson $10 million a year and Asante Samuel $9.5 million a year.

This, shockingly, seems like a fairly reasonable deal for both parties. One reason the Jets shouldn't be too displeased is the nature of Revis' rookie deal, which contained a buy-out clause for years 5 and 6 -- which could in turn be nullified by the Jets by paying nearly $16 million guaranteed for those two years (plus escalators to a possible total of around $20 million).

So, essentially, the Jets are paying Revis $46 million for 4 years instead of half that for 3. The real lift in salary for Revis is this year, where his rookie contract only called for something like a million dollars (which is why he wouldn't play).

Revis won, bottom line. The jets came running to him in Florida to get the deal done. I knew Revis would eventually get his money. It may not have been Nhandi money, but he'll only be 28 after this deal and get hit the jackpot again. With Calvin Pace injured and Mark Sanchez sucking the jets had no choice. I'm glad revis stood his ground and got the money. I'm all for the players.

Great - now, Revis can get burned on every play cause he got his money.

George-Foreman-Guarantee that he won't beat his numbers from last year.

I want to see more details before I conclude who "won"  Particularly given the rules regarding guaranteed money.  Depending on how it is structure it could be only a year or two before Revis holds out again.

I don't think Revis will even have the opportunity to beat his numbers from last year.

In 2009, Revis has the opportunity to match up against A.Johnson (HOU), S.Smith (CAR), R.White (ATL), Wayne (IND), Ochocinco (CIN), T.Owens (BUF) twice, and Moss (NE) twice.  Although you can certainly argue about the actual quality of those players (vs. some of them riding on name recognition), that's certainly a marquee list, and comprises 9 of NYJ's 16 games.

In 2010, given that Sidney Rice is not expected to be back until at least Week 7 and MIN @ NYJ is Week 5, the marquee competition he will be facing is as follows:

C.Johnson (DET), Ochocinco or Owens (pick one, CIN), Moss (NE) twice, Marshall (MIA) twice.  That's 6 games, and I submit that there's a huge difference in defending Manning to Wayne or Schaub to Johnson vs. Stafford to Johnson or Henne to Marshall.

Yes, Ginn scored a TD on Revis that one time.

It is not a factor in evaluating Revis any more than it is a factor in evaluating Ginn.

It was still pretty sweet though
