Wow somebody had the Saints.....the defending Champs at #7? I know it is only week one and it takes a few weeks for these rankings to start leveling out but good lord someone thinks pretty low of them!!!!!!

Thanks for the quick work, Maine.

^  I think that the weird rankings are justified at this point.  KC is in my top 10.  I freely admit that they probably won't be by the end of the year, but this isn't a week 17 ranking, it's only after week 1.  KC was very impressive in their win against a team that is normally pretty competitive.

This will all iron out after a few weeks.

Just curious, did the Dolphins get any top 10 votes?

the chiefs had 68 yards passing and 135 yards rushing.  their defense gave up 298 yards passing to rivers.  I would say that they were a bad team that got lucky for one week.  9/10 times they lose that game, but it is the NFL, so any team can win.  Their is no way they should be in the top 20, let alone the top 10.

Were they really?  If you just look at the stats it appears that SD outplayed them but got beat on turnovers/special teams.

1st Downs           18      9
Passing 1st downs   14      4
Rushing 1st downs   4       5
3rd down efficiency 4-15    1-11
4th down efficiency 1-3     0-1
Total Plays         70      49
Total Yards         389     197
Passing             280     62
Comp-Att            22-39   10-22
Yards per pass      7.2     2.8
Rushing             109     135
Rushing Attempts    29      26
Yards per rush      3.8     5.2
Red Zone (Made-Att) 1-2     1-1
Penalties           5-30    3-35

I watched the game and I was impressed.  Perhaps it's not justified, but it's splitting hairs, because it will work itself out over the coming weeks.  We're all speculating at how good these teams are at this point.

I was tempted to make Miami my #10 team. But I went with the bears I think

I am impressed at the non-homeristicness of the results.

I think on a lot of fan sites the home team would make the top 10 even though undeserving.

I really wanted to select the Dolphins in the top 10, but to break in those ranks, they're going to have to beat teams that are better than the Bills.

Good results, though.  I can't really argue against the top 5.  Thanks for the compiling the data, MaineDolFan.

Maine, did you get my PT?  I don't see the message in my outbox.

Anyway, I thought that my choice to leave MIN off would be controversial, but I guess not.

I don't know how you guys do your ranking (and I don't claim that my way is better), but I don't rank teams based on how they played in the last game.  I look at it as: If team A played team B and I had to bet on the results, straight up, who would I pick to win?  Under this philosophy, there's no way I would rank KC one of the top 10 teams in the league, no matter how they played against SD.

Call it the homer card if you like, but I think MIA has been taking way too much heat for the BUF game.  MIA beat a weak division opponent on the road, leading from start to finish (albeit with a late BUF score to make it close), and ESPN dropped MIA 4 spots in the rankings.  Meanwhile, SD loses by a touchdown to a weak division opponent, and they're... also dropped 4 spots.

We'll see what happens after the MIN game.

KC impressed me in pretty much every area except QB, where Cassel looked lost out there. With Jamaal Charles, T-Jones and Dexter McCluster, they have a sick 3-headed running game with extreme big play potential. They have a lot of young talent on defense as well. I have them in my top-10 this week, and expect them to keep winning and stay there.

I consider San Diego to possibly be the best team to NOT make my top-10 this week.

I'm with both of you guys, and I've been talking about it quite a bit with my equally football-lovin' friends and my Dad...the Chiefs really impressed me Monday night, regardless of the yardage difference.  The story isn't always told by yardage differences because when you're doing things like returning 94 yard punts for TD's or whatever it was that Dexter returned that one for the score for, as well as the two nice ones (at least) that my no-neck monster boy Javie busted out, you don't have as much yardage to even "work with" as the offense, if you will, plus they're giving the ball right back to SD after punt returns for scores.  Just by the "look test", though, KC appeared young and exciting.  Granted, I take that with a grain of salt when it's opening day, Monday night, at your place against a division rival, but still, there was something about them that screamed to me, "this is gonna be a good team in the not-so-distant future", especially with Pioli behind the wheels.  I'm also a little biased being an SEC fan in general (though unlike some of them around here in AL, I can appreciate college football throughout the land...after all, I am a Michigan fan primarily  Wink ), but I saw young talent all over the field for them.

Not a Chiefs fan by any means, and while they're obviously not in our division, they are in our conference so they can potentially be a threat to us one day as we continue to improve, too, hopefully, but good for them...I don't like seeing teams be crappy unless it's the Pats, Jets, Bills, or Ravens.   Cheesy
