NFL Network PLAYBOOK show. Mike Mayock broke down the final drive and pointed that Marshall was so gassed he wasn't even trying really. Mike Mayock was the hardest on Marshall saying he was "dogging it".  Sterling Sharpe was rough on Brandon as well

1st down: Marshall is gassed but matched on Cromartie one-on-one with NO safety help within 10 yards and Henne made the right read to him on the fade but he doesn't do much to beat the coverage and get to the ball. Henne makes the right read and throw, Marshall is too gassed to do anything.

2nd down: Marshall is matched up with a safety over the top. Marshall cannot even beat his guy with hand checking let alone get open. No explosion what-so-ever and Henne baits the safety help to step up leaving Marshall with a step on his guy but late in the play and the pressure forces Henne to tuck and run. Henne should have made that throw to Marshall to see if he could make the grab.

3rd down: Marshall again man up with safety help over the top. Marshall is so tired he doesn't get off the line and Henne checks down to RB for 5 yards.

4th down. Henne screws this up IMO. Henne NEVER once looks to the left side of the field where the Jets show 5 but bring 3 and Marshall is one on one and cuts inside and is more open than Fasano. Henne should have read that and thrown the ball to Marshall and with Henne's arm that should have been a td to Marshall. Every bit of the middle of the field to the right was SWARMING with Jet's defenders.

Therefore B. Marshall was NOT triple or even double covered. Miami had another wideout on that side to draw the inside defender away from Marshall and the safety over the top was a non-factor for a 5 yard pass.

watching the breakdown of that film. Sharpe and Co. chided marshall for not "stepping up" on the final series of plays but gave him a pass because of the florida heat.

If Marshall was so gassed, why did the coaches leave him in?  If he's too gassed to try, then maybe it's time for someone else to replace him.

I agree completely with the NFL Network guys in this case. As I wrote in the "Game Ball" thread:

Am I the only one who thought Marshall looked out of shape? He had an IV drop during halftime, sucked major wind after most every play and following "big" plays in the second half he pretty much took a play off. Don't get me wrong here, he had a great game, I'm just surprised at the little things and can't help but wonder if he could've put up even better numbers.

He was hogging the oxygen mask on the sideline as well Wink

The dude just got done running 50 yards making a catch to even get us to 1st and goal!

Most guys come out of the game after a play like that.  I don't blame him for being tired.

He should have come out on 1st down for a breather, I guess.  But don't get on his case for being gassed after the one big play to get us there.

I didn't see the segment, but let's think about this for two seconds....

I don't think they took into account....Marshall had a hip injury that kept him on a bike most of training camp...Played a Half at best a half of 3 games during the preseason games, the first two games are on the road (At Buffalo, and in a dome at the Vikings),and didn't throw all that much, didn't need to throw and 75-80 yards hurry up at the end of the game to win it.

His first home game in the humidity,we try to throw the leather off the ball most of the game,We needed him out there, him being out there, gassed is still a threat....

Not to mention, Henne threw the ball 44 or so times, which means Marshall likely ran about 40 routes at full speed, 10 or 12 of which he was the intended receiver.

And they're dogging him for being tired at the end of the game after running 50 yards trying to tie the game.

Give me a break.

I think I read or heard somewhere that Marshall was thrown at 17 or 18 times.

So what it's going to take to get this guy in game shape for 4 quarters?
I understand the guy's tired, but being too tired to compete in the closing seconds is worrisome.

Apparently he took the loss hard immediately after the game. I look at it this way. As long as we learned something from it and get better from it the loss is not a bad thing. Here is the article of him after the game but I'll post some of his quotes.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2010/09/brandon-marshall-steaming-after-jets-loss.html

I thought I had enough speed to get there. I’m mad at myself,” Marshall said. “I didn’t have enough legs to get into the end zone. I’m kicking myself right now.
“We had confidence that we were going to get in the end zone,” said Marshall, who couldn’t bring in an overthrown pass on the very next play. “When we got into that huddle I said, ‘Let’s focus on the 2-point play.’ But we just didn’t get it done.”
....

The past two weeks they were taking away the pass and we ran the ball more. [The Jets] wanted to take away the run and we took advantage of whatever was there. They wanted to play one-on-one outside and the receivers pride ourselves on beating one-on-one. It was a battle out there,” Marshall said. “We made plays, but didn’t make enough.

Brian, it wasn't just after that one play. Like I wrote after the game in the Game Ball thread, he seemed to take plays off all throughout the second half. (And, like I said before as well, I'm NOT saying he didn't have a great game).

I'd like to see the reverses ran by Bess, if we insist on running the wildcat, let him take breathers then,Try to work Bess,Hartline,Moore, whomever into those Single receiver sets more often.

I admit, the thing that worries me,is can we fill his tank back up enough for this week against the Patriots...IT reminds me of Lamar Smith against the Colts in the playoffs, the next week...err nothing...

Here is the link...

http://www.nfl.com/videos/miami-dolphins/09000d5d81aef266/Playbook-Brandon-Marshall-loses-steam

After watching this the only thought I have is...  ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING!

1st down had nothing to do with tired legs.  He was way overthrown and the ball came out too early.  This was Henne's fault all the way.

2nd down was a fade.  Once he gets on the other side of the defender, his job is to hold the defender close and allow space to push off and gain separation in the back of the end zone.  Yes, pushing off is illegal but rarely called.  If he halls ass off the snap he would run out of room to make the catch and the receiver would be in his face when the ball gets there.

3rd down didn't appear to be coming his way no matter what and he seemed to know it.

4th down he gets inside across the goal line and would have scored the touchdown if thrown his way.

Once again (from the game ball thread), Marshall damn near won the game for us.  Henne played decent but he wasn't as good as he is getting credit for in this game.  Henne underperformed in that series, not Marshall.  Sorry guys, it is the truth and I am sure that Henne will get better but he isn't there yet.

I agree in part, but Marshall gives up on the play almost as soon as the ball left Henne's hand.  I'd like to see a little more effort to get to a poorly thrown pass.  It's often the effort of the WR that gets the DB called for pass interference there.

Don't get me wrong, I don't fault Marshall for not catching this pass, only for a little lack of effort which I attributed to the fact that he had just given all-out effort to get it down to the 10.  Go back and read the comments from Marshall himself about that play.  He thought he was gonna score (where he gets pushed out of bounds at the 10), but he said he didn't have the legs.  Basically he admitted to the fact that he was tired.  I don't think there's any question that as soon as he saw the poorly thrown ball, he gave up on it so it's not entirely true it had nothing to do with tired legs.

the coaches are absolutely abusing him. throwing to him 15 times a game. he almost single handedly tied the game for us on that final drive. if he's a little winded at the end, I think it's understandable. The main problem on the first and goal was the play calling. and the fact that henne ran it up the middle instead of to the right, where he would have scored/

WELCOME BERKELEY!!!!!!!

I totally agree with what you said. I have no problem with Marshall being gassed. Now Marshall does have games in his past where he caught 18 and 22 balls in a single game, but those weren't played in the South Florida heat and humidity.

The best thing to come out of Sunday nights game was that we now know if NEEDED our QB can get the ball to Henne pretty much anytime he wants. which those first 2 games it was was a little iffy cause we weren't seeing it
