I quit...

Yep,but I quit on the other fans of this team...The ones that act suicidal, fire everyone, why haven't we fired everyone, this team is the worst in history, get rid of everyone, everyone sucks,we should draft these players after week 5 or 6...after every loss...Yet hardly a peep when we win.....The ones that say if we lose too........I'm done with all of you....

I hope we lose out so we can drive more of these fans away to another bandwagon.

The problem that I see with the Dolphins even in the late Shula years is that they always thought they were one or two players away from going to the Super Bowl when they should have blown the plan up a couple of times and rebuilt from scratch. Shula, as great as he was as a coach, was a flawed GM. When he signed all those free agents in 1995 thinking that would get him and Dan to a Super Bowl, he really misfired which led to him "stepping down" (call it what you want, he was gently fired).

Jimmy gets a lot of flak but he had the right plan. First, he fixed the defense through the draft with Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Sam Madison, Daryl Gardener and Patrick Surtain. He DID built a Super Bowl worthy defense. His only problem was that he knew Marino was on his last legs but couldn't get rid of him. Fans would have burned Miami to the ground if Marino would have been traded.

Every Dolphins coach since Shula understands that when you take the job, you are expected to win. This leads to a lot of pressure to get a squad that at least will go 10-6 and make the first round of the playoffs. Anything less in Miami is unacceptable.

Tony Sparano killed the Dolphins when he kept shuffling the offense line. That will be his downfall. When he had the lineup of Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Donald Thomas, Vernon Carey and Jake Grove at center, the Dolphin offensive line was mauling people. Grove had injury issues but when he played, he could move people out of the way. Those guys got to the second level. Plus, I believe that he had a personality conflict with Smiley and Thomas.

The Dolphins haven't given fans reasons to be happy for a long time.

Let me answer your question a little more simply and practically...

Because we are an O-coordinator, QB, and speedy running back short of being a pretty damn good team.  Factor in that the QB play may be a byproduct of crappy coaching and you can see why we aren't far.
If you have any doubt that we will have a new O-coordinator and a new running back next year then let that doubt go.  Henne is up for debate, but you can see him getting worse and you can see how he isn't being properly prepared for situational football which spells out bad coaching to me.

Sparano is another debate, but something tells me he would be more aggressive if he could trust his offense more.  Get rid of Henning and the QB couch first, get some speed from a back and a second tight end to throw to and then judge Sparano and Henne.  I personally think it will be enough.

Just wondering:

Imagine if somebody did actually quit the team and started rooting for another one.

Then, imagine if they joined a message board and posted in the introduction thread:

"Hi, I am so and so, I used to be a fan of the Dolphins, but they've been so bad for so long that I stopped rooting for them and started rooting for ________."

How would they be received?

I'll reiterate my earlier point.

This is a game football and should not be that big of a deal in your life.

^^^ people sometimes switch allegiances on teams.

I know of one Pats fan that became a Vikings fan over the Moss trade.

Many Raven's fans were once Colts fans.

I have a friend who switched to rooting for all his wife's teams cause when they lost and he was rooting against her she would take it out personally on him.  And he decided he cared more about a harmonious relationship than any particular sports team.

I know one "Bills fan" who occasionally gets a free ticket to Patriots games from a Pats fan.  He pretends to root for the Pats as that is a condition of the free tickets.

I know of people who have moved from one city to another and switched to the local team.

I think it would be pretty easy to switch from being a Dolphin fan to a Falcon fan if you lived in Atlanta and got free tickets to the games this year.  I think it would be harder to switch with in a conference and even harder within a division.

I think what it would take for me to switch would be a family member playing for the team.  Say if one of my nephews became good enough to get drafted into the NFL.  I would root for his team (even if it was the Jets)

And if I was move to an NFC team city and regularly attended games I could see myself rooting for two teams, and if that NFC team was doing very well while the Patriots were not. Putting more energy in the team doing well that I get to see live.

So to answer your question, I think if they showed up at an another AFCE board...probably would be weird.  An NFC team not a big deal.

There is a radio personality (Steve Duemig) here in Tampa that lived in PHI his whole life, then moved to Tampa to be a radio host about a decade ago (I believe he's in his 50s).  He's now a Bucs/Lightening/Rays fan and says if you move to a city, you need to support the local team and abandon your old allegiance.  I don't really agree whole heartily with that, but I think if you move to a state, you should support one of the teams in it or at the very least, close enough to it.  I'm a 3rd generation Floridian and have always been a MIA fan.  To me, rooting for a FLA team, whether it's MIA (my brother, nephew and I), TB (My sister and my dad) or JAX (my other nephew) is part of our FL culture.  No one in our family roots for a non FL team except my other nephew, and he's a traitor (damn DAL fan...jumped on the bandwagon when he was young and DAL won all their Superbowls).

You should cheer for your hometown teams, unless they move away.  I could never see myself supporting other teams over the teams I supported my whole life. (that being the Cardinals and the Blues)  Even if I moved, they would still be my favorite teams.

What if YOU move away?  I was a Bears fan growing up in Illinois, but I also liked watching the Dolphins for various reasons.  When I was 20, I moved to Texas.  I absolutely hated the Cowboys for various reasons, so I became a full time Dolphins fan.  Is that wrong?  Why should I be forced to root for the local team if I don't like them?  And if I don't have to root for them, shouldn't I be allowed to root for whomever I want?

I did pretty much the same thing with the Bulls and Celtics, mostly because of Larry Bird.

I'm still a Whitesox and Blackhawks fan.

Does this make me a bad person?

^^^ I agree with you Pappy. Why should I cheer for the Eagles if I don't like them? I'm a huge fan of the other three Philly teams, but just have never cared for the Eagles. Does this make me a bad person? I travel to Miami to see games whenever I can (BTW- good news coming in regards to that), and have travelled all over the country to see the Fins play.

Yes, Pappy you are a BAD person.  Bad, Pappy, bad.   Evil  j/k

I have moved quite a few times.  I have never switched allegiances on the major league.

But I have on the AHL and minor baseball (although I don't think any of the MiLB teams are in the same group).  I have also picked up a couple of college teams along the way that never play the earlier colleges that I had rooted for.

I loved your post, but thought I'd shed some different light on it...Grove had an injury when we let him go,and Still hasn't signed with another team (He's tried out).Since his "nagging" injury seemed to be worse than it was reported to us,and his high contract they Cut him...Resigned Proctor to be back up Center (now on IR)

Donald Thomas (strangely enough) Signed with the Lions around Thanksgiving (11/23), and hasn't taken a snap yet...Thomas couldn't stay healthy enough, probably one of the reasons why they drafted John Jerry...

Smiley had been injured the past two years (off the top of my head) with a shoulder injury, was also expensive....They brought in Incognito...

Not to forget they had Garner last year, who was playing all over as the sub (I'll need to double check that) He went on IR, and we traded for Pat McQuistan...

I think they sort of shuffled out of necessity, and did a fair-good job with trying to plan....Where they failed IMO,is not having better depth for stuff like this....

Modified to add, Never lived in Florida (even my visiting Florida is up for dispute IMO),Live in Mo....I don't like the Chiefs (hated Schottenheimer),not a Rams fan....Hate the Cowboys...(Before the Rams move, the Cowboys were our NFC home team,Jerry Jones from here)...I'm A Cubs fan Living in Mo. Need I say More...I'll love my Teams, regardless of where I live....

Read more carefully next time.  I was arguing against switching teams, unlike the guy Tenshot13 was referring to.
