Even though it is a boring pick and he may not be as good as his brother, we did get the number one inside OL prospect on everyones board in the draft.  It isn't a sexy pick but it is a good pick and fills a need of ours.

^^ I hear what you are saying, but honestly I think that's part of Miami's problem. We have a safe unsexy head coach, the one who likes field goals, offensive lineman and running plays and he's filling the team with safe, unsexy picks.

At SOME point we have to break out of that mold and start taking some chances. I hear MikeO and Armando criticize Henne relentlessly for his play, but then they go and support the decision to pick an offensive guard rather than take a chance on a franchise QB? I don't understand that line of thinking. One doesn't logically fit with the other.

I don't have a problem with taking Pouncey, but when Miami is running it up the gut on 3rd and 4 next year, I don't want to hear any complaining from those of you who support this pick, because that's what you're asking for if you support the choice of Pouncey. Safe, unsexy offense. You'll forgive me if I was hoping for risky, sexy for once.

^^^ 100% agree pappy...

safe picks don't get you super bowl wins. for all of long's greatness, we've been 7-9 the last 2 years while the falcons are real contenders.

hell, mike pouncey might be as good as his brother, but the steelers are loaded with skill players.

the dolphins fo is running this organization like they still play with leather helmets.

And when those get converted will you not be applauding? This team needs O-line help. This was the best pick available at a position of need. The words franchise QB get overused so much it makes me sick. There wasn't a single QB in this draft that I think is super star caliber. Everyone knows O-line play helps both the QB & RB positions. I like the pick. Football teams sell tickets with sexy picks, but win in the trenches.

Well that's the thing about drafts, you never really know until a couple years later. It's a risk/reward thing. There are very few sure things. Little risk, little reward. Big risk, potentially big reward and potential bust. Take your pick. I think you gotta mix in a few risks with the safe picks to have a shot at being great even if it means enduring some big busts.

^^ And how do you draw the line on what is high and low risk? Personally, I think you are labeling it as a low risk/low reward move based on the position/player and the fact it doesn't jive with what you wanted to happen. Why is low reward always coupled with low risk anyway? I feel it is completely possible to find a low risk pick that also brings high reward. How much risk was there in taking Tom Brady when he was picked? I'd say that has brough pretty high reward to NE.

So certainly the people who are saying that you have to take Big Risks if you want to win were applauding the Ted Ginn pick 4 years ago, right?  Or the Pat White pick 2 years ago?

Of course I am. You trying to tell me that you think there will be one game next year where you point to Pouncey and say, "We don't win that game if we don't draft that kid". It's not going to happen. That's just the nature of the offensive line position and Pouncey himself.

On the other hand there are gonna be a handful of games where you look at your QB and say that he either won or lost the game for you. Of course he probably didn't, but that's also the nature of the position.

and the fact it doesn't jive with what you wanted to happen.
No, that had nothing to do with determining whether or not it's high risk high reward or not. It was the position he plays and the players involved. Mallet is risky not because of his physical ability, but rather because of his intangibles. They worry about his leadership ability and such. Pouncey on the other hand comes with a bloodline. The assumption is that because his brother is a success, the chances are that he will be a success.

Why is low reward always coupled with low risk anyway?
It's not. Everyone pretty much agrees that Jake Long was low risk, but he was pretty high reward. Not everyone is Jake Long though and I don't really think anyone believes that Pouncey is comparable to Jake Long.

Of course it is, but it's a total accident. Anyone who tells me they knew that Tom Brady was going to be a star when he was drafted is full of shit. No one knew that, not even Belicheck or he would have been taken in the first round. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything, there are always gonna be guys that come out of nowhere and produce. The problem is that you can't predict who they are going to be. It's impossible.

I applauded the Tedd Ginn pick at the time, yes. It didn't work out. That's the nature of the beast. No where have I said this was a bad pick, just a boring unsexy one and that I thought it should have been a sexy exciting one. Sexy picks don't always work out. That's what makes them high risk, but when they do work out, jump on their back and ride them. I think the Dolphins need a shot of excitement on the offensive side of the ball. I was hoping that Marshall would be that last year, but it didn't pan out. It's the one area we are sorely lacking. We don't have a single player on the offensive side of the ball that scares the defense. We need one badly.  That's pretty much what anyone who watches football will tell you. Pouncey ain't it. It didn't have to be the QB, but there wasn't a RB that was it and we already have a pretty good stable of WR's, I thought there were a couple of QB's that had a shot.

Pat White was a different story. I HATED that pick. I hate mobile QB's to begin with. On top of that we already had Ronnie Brown who I felt was the BEST player to run the wildcat in the NFL at the time. Maybe he's not, but he's close and he's a damn site better than Pat White was ever going to be.  That was just a stupid pick, not because it didn't work out but because we didn't need him, we already had Ronnie Brown and we didn't need to improve the wildcat, we needed to improve other places.

It's not too late by the way. I'm still holding out hope that Sparano and Ireland will pull a trade out of their hat and trade into the second round and get Mallet. That would be awesome. Chances that it will happen? About 5 maybe 10%. Too bold and too risky both for Sparano and for Ireland. Do it and it would restore my faith in those guys though.
