The Athletics didn't invent the Moneyball philosophies, but they were the first to use them to such an extent. They had a run of success that resulted in a few division titles, but no pennants. The last few years they have been crap, to put it mildly. Their formula for success hasn't betrayed them as a lot of teams use these methods, so what happened to Oakland? Why are they so bad now?
Beane has a small ownership in Oakland, so I don't know if he is going away, but if a GM had 5 straight losing seasons, would he still be employed? Can't even play the small market card with the Rays consistently doing well in a division with the Yankees and Red Sox.
Just food for thought.
