John Lackey will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss all of 2012. It's a tough break for the Yankees and Rays.

I heard a joke that the Sox tried to get the Cubs to TAKE Lackey for payment for Theo leaving

I think I read somewhere that Lackey's injury activates a clause in his contract that Boston can retain him for the league minimum in 2014. Maybe the veteran's minimum or something. If true, that would be pretty awesome for Boston. Hell, even if he continues to be terrible, I would pick up the option and let him rot for being such a douche.

It wasn't a joke, this was serious.  The Sox asked about Garza, a couple other guys.  They inquired about a trade of Lackey (and cash) for a low level minor league player (and Theo).  Cubs were interested, pending the outcome of Lackey's elbow review.
