Positions of Need, Re-assessed 03-20-12

The way I see it we have 4 needs left to fill (possibly).

Right tackle - could be filled by Murtha.
Pass rusher - draft or Anderson.
Wide receiver - draft.
Future QB - draft or wait a year.

We could debate a bit about tight end, but we don't really need more than one solid tight end in the west coast.  Between Fasano and Clay, we can likely wait a year.  We don't have much cap room left for free agents, but might be able to squeeze out a solid deal for Anderson. 

So lets assume my assessment is correct for a bit before we go all wacky shit off track like usual.  How do you handle filling these needs and in what order?  Take into account cap space.

Agree with depth.  We have Smith and Davis outside, Jones at Strong Safety, Richard Marshall or Clemons at Free Safety, Richard Marshall or Wilson at nickel corner.  Culver is a backup safety and Nolan Carrol is a backup corner.  Not the best in the league, but a serviceable group none the less.  I think we can get some players later in the draft.

Draft best available OL (AGAIN!?), Pass rusher, or wideout at # 8.  Double down on wideout in the second or third round, as there are several big, fast guys slated for around then (yes, I want Tommy Streeter.  I'm a UM homer and he's a legit 6'5", 220 with 4.3 speed).

Leave free agency alone for now, reassess after the draft and second round of cuts (after teams reassess post-draft rosters).  Anderson is a legitimately scary player in that he's great one year, awful for 3 after that, so I stay away.

a LG - No sure on Incongnito's status..I think he has one or 2 years left
a RG - Carey's gone
a RT -  Colombo's gone (thank god)

Kendall Langford's replacement - is it Merling?

OLB - Pass rush is desperately needed opposite Wake

Secondary help - Allen, Bell gone,  Richard Marshall was a decent pick up.  Who's playing Safety?

Don't take my comment as an insult, I just want your opinion; the real one and not the one that is venting in the process.

You can only do so much in a year.  Classically, each year you get the chance to sign a couple of free agents and your top 3 draft picks are potential impact players.  Waver wires, lower draft picks and undrafted free agents are where you find depth, developmental players and roll fillers (special teams). 

Of course you could build an entire roster on undrafted free agents and change out the entire roster if you wanted but it will be a shit team.

This team needs 2 legit WR's or else its gonna be a long year.

Tannehill being burried 3rd on the depth chart behind Moore and Garrard and getting no practice reps during the season doesn't help this team. If you draft Tannehill then get rid of Moore or Garrard and make Tannehill the #2 GB and let him get work in during the year during practice and in games too when the opportunity is there

Nice work, Tubba.  I think it is really hard to project specific players beyond mid 3rd round-ish, but I agree with the concept you have going there.

I would go with...

1st round - Tannehill (sit a year), Coples if Tannehill not available.  Won't freak out if we go with Weedon or Upshaw.

2nd round - Weedon or Cousins (if we don't take a QB first round), best available pass rusher if QB already drafted.

3rd round - Double down on receivers.  Might take a look at Naanee or Sims-Walker first.

4th round - Safety or Tackle (whichever has highest grade)

5th round - Safety or Tackle (whichever hasn't been drafted)

6th round - Corner

It is between Murtha, Garner, Jerry and Hicks to sort out the right side of our starting line this year.
