Here's the play. You be the judge. Unintended physical play or intentional punch? The girl was suspended for 2 games. Wambach called the play "unsportsmanlike" and "dangerous".

Just FYI, I agree the girl needed to be suspended, largely because it could have resulted in Abby missing a number of games.

Intentional punch.

I would allow that at any time of the game where physical contact were merited, like fighting for position near the ball.  But these players were in a sprint away from the ball and had no real reason to be making any contact, much less a face punch.

I agree and I won't argue with anyone that thought it was an intentional punch, but allow me to explain my reasoning why I don't think it was. I watch a lot of womens soccer and I know the players well. The book on how you beat Abby is that you have to be physical with her. She's an imposing player, almost always the largest player on the pitch and knows how to throw her weight around. Just take a look at the goal she scored in the second game where she outmuscles 2 players to get to the ball first and score. Once she gets position on you, you're not getting it back, so many players try to knock her off her stride even before she can get into position. In my opinion the girl, who was probably giving up 20 or 30 pounds to Abby, was in a bad position, behind and not ball side (meaning between the ball and Abby) and felt she had to do something to gain an advantage or Abby would get into the box and be in perfect position for a cross from the player with the ball. So the girl threw her arm at Abby hoping to knock her off stride and allow her to be able to get in front of her. It was a reckless play, no question about it, but I don't think she meant to strike Abby in the eye. The contact to the face was unintended.

Anyone saw Usain Bolt set a new record in the 100m?  I'd love to try him out as a receiver/kick returner for the Dolphins.

At 6'5" and 205 lbs, I can't really call Usain tiny.  Skinny maybe, but they'd fix that in training camp.

I often wonder how Olympic sprinters would fare in the NFL.  Bob Hayes changed the NFL forever.  I'd be open to the possibility of a successor.
