A LOT of people become fans when that particular team is winning/popular and always on T.V. (How many F'in Cowboys fans do I know... sigh.)

That happens to some extent.  What I think happens more is locals get more interested in a team when it is winning.

I have heard a claim that many Patriots fans are ex-Cowboy fans.  I don't know a single one.  But I do know dozens of people that pre-Brady, didn't pay much attention to football but if asked to name a favorite team would say "Patriots." But rarely ever watched a game on TV and couldn't name more than 2 players on the team.  And now watch every game, wear jerseys etc.

I have always been a diehard Patriots fan, but the above basically describes my relationship with Bruiens, Celtics and Red Sox.  If I have to pick a team those are my choices, but unless they are in the playoffs I am not watching.

I met Larry Bird in the early 80's. He did a visit to see a Space Shuttle launch. It was just a chance encounter. Shook his hand, that was about it.  Always loved him on the Celtics!

Fins4ever,
Just a tip -
When you quote a portion of someone's post, please make sure not to delete the [/quote] tag at the end of the quote.  That's why your posts show up as the above.  I've fixed this for you a few times...  Just letting you know.

I grew up in Southeastern MA. I'm my father's oldest girl thus his "boy"

I went to Fenway and the Garden as a kid. Lots of Pawtucket games. Watched the Pats on TV. I love my Sox and Pats. I watch basketball still, but no where as much as I did in middle/high school.

Hockey is another beast. Dear old dad wasn't a big hockey guy so I never really watched as a kid.

I had moved to Florida when I was in high school and my junior year dated a guy whose father was the Play by Play guy for the Panthers. Josh's after school job was working for the Panthers - on ice picking up rats for home games and for away games, putting together video of power plays and scoring plays. I would go with him for away games and he taught me the basics that way. I really got into hockey when Brian and I went to our first game together. Now we're season ticket holders and can't wait for this damn lockout to end.

I'm the girl that makes men jealous of my husband

I hate Red Sox and Patriots bandwagon fans. They give the rest of us a bad name
