What is Dolphins Discussion?

We seem to be having a real problem lately with people not understanding what the forums are for.  As a way to help every sort it out, I'm going to break it down:

Dolphins discussion is a place to share ideas about the Dolphins - past, present, and future.  If you're wondering if something belongs in this section, ask yourself: Is this likely to produce a real debate?

What isn't allowed in Dolphins Discussion:
- trolling
- comments made specifically to bait or incite
- name-calling to other players
- links to outside material that doesn't have your own commentary (other people can't respond if you don't give them a prompt)
- rants
- circlejerks (going back and forth over and over by the same two people in a circular argument)
- jumping topics that stray too far from the original thread

What is encouraged in Dolphins Discussion:
- game previews
- game reflections/grades
- live blog during games
- speculation for the future of the team, etc.
- discussion about the Dolphins brand, marketing, apparel, etc.

Within reason, I think that we are allowed to hold each other responsible for our positions.  If you claim that the Dolphins have no chance this week and we win big, prepare to eat a little bit of crow, in fun.  However, make sure that we poke fun at people's positions and not at the posters themselves.

It is quite ridiculous that you have one forum for circle jerking the dolphins, and another for realistic Dolphin views.  Posts criticizing the dolphins are still "dolphin discussion"

There is plenty of criticism in the Dolphins thread but it's done in debatable conversation. The Anti- Phins section is for people to bitch and criticize for no other reason than to get it off their chest or mock the team. If you can't see the difference then I don't know what to tell you.

The difference is clear.  The question is, why lock threads instead of just moving them with a note that the thread was in the wrong forum?  Tepop's thread on Jonathan Martin would've generated some good discussion.

Because he continually breaks the same rules.

If someone unknowingly had done this it would have been easy to correct the issue and move it, all the while explaining the rules. Like I said I felt it could have generated conversation but I have no idea of his intent if he posts no commentary.  It gets really old to continually deal with the same rule breakers over and over.

Thanks for pointing that out.  Another question.  Why do the gameday threads get locked after the game?  I'm sure some post game discussion could be going on as long as no rules are broken.

The game day threads get locked because the game is over.  It's a live blog, detailing the play-by-play as it happens.  After that, there are a multitude of new threads to move the conversation....which is good.  Threads that are 14 pages long, nobody is reading anymore.  If there are still points of interest after the game, great -- start new threads.  You'll get better response on them, too.

I appreciate your view, but I draw a distinction between fair criticism that invites discussion and ranting or trolling.

I don't want you to take this as a threat or anything like that.  I want you to stay here and post to your heart's content if you're interested in promoting good ideas.  However, there are many other sites that have forums that moderate and organize posts differently.  If you disagree with how we do things here, I'd prefer that you find another forum that better suits your tastes.

There is no RULE or LAW that says you have to read or post in every thread on every topic. So if you don't like the topic of a thread, no need to post..."why is there a thread about this"

Just simply skip it! Maybe "SOME" people here want to talk about an issue. And just because you don't that doesn't mean there can't be a thread about it. Also, the rest of us don't care that you don't care about a given thread topic. So no need to post that!

On the no rule theme.  And this isn't specifically directed at you, but a comment in general regarding various issues.

There is NO RULE or LAW you need to visit this board at all.  If you don't like the moderation, feel the rules are too restrictive, not restrictive enough, etc there are about a half a dozen other discussion boards dedicated to discussing the Dolphins feel free to find a new home.

It would be nice if this one were enforced. I've been told point blank by a moderator that if a post isn't directly insulting and name calling, not to report it even if it falls into the above category. -EK

How is reading a post saying "I don't care about this" any different than reading 15 saying "me too" and adding noting more to a conversation? I'm afraid you are just going to have to read it and get over it.
