Update. Looks like he's changed his mind. If Ireland were smart, he would get a deal done now.

Get a deal done? he's under contract...
He's in the final year of his deal. He outplayed that deal last year and nearly made the Pro Bowl. A smart GM would lock him up into a long term deal now. If he has another big year, its gonna cost even more money to keep him off the free agent market

Better to sign him to a "solid contributor" deal now and cut him if he doesn't produce, than to have him play well again and be forced to sign him to a "star" contract or watch him walk.
MIA doesn't exactly have a lot of depth at the position.
Exactly my point. Teams like New England, Green Bay and Pittsburgh do this on a regular basis. This is good cap management

And I'm sure that's what Miami would like to do. I'm not sure that he wants a "solid contributor" deal though. I think he would like to have a pro-bowl type of multi-year guaranteed contract. That's why these things usually take a lot longer than we fans would like. I think they'll eventually get a contract done this year, but it will be later rather than sooner because of this reason.
I wouldn't pay a "pro bowl type of multi-year guaranteed contract" to a guy who has never made a pro bowl.

Not that it means anything in late May but Michael Egnew was 1st team Tight End in many packages this week ahead of Keller. I mean Keller will still be the starter at the end of the day but Philbin said Egnew has earned the spot with the time and work he has put in this offseason.
If Egnew can contribute at all in any way its only a bonus at this point. For a guy who was publicy written off as a lost cause by some of his own teammates last year.
Not reading anything into it but maybe a light-bulb went off in Egnew's head where he can at least be a viable #2 or #3 TE on this team and see the field in some packages
If I recall correctly, at the start of OTA's in 2009, Shawn Murphy had "earned" the starting guard spot. We all know where he ended up after training camp.
