Boy I used to hate this guy. It killed me that he and Dan were friends and would hang out together ... as many players do. In fact I believe it was their relationship that helped me to realize that our guys don't actually "hate" other teams like the fans do.

It also helped me to realize that Jim Kelly was a great guy who has done a lot of good in his life.  I really hate to see this happen to him and pray that he comes through this just fine!

Quote
Legendary Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly will undergo surgery after being diagnosed with squamous-cell carcinoma (cancer) of the upper jaw bone.

According to a press release by his former club, the procedure will be performed on Friday, June 7, and his chances for a complete recovery are “very good.” Fortunately, the cancer is isolated in Kelly’s upper jaw and has not spread to other parts of his body.

Kelly thanked fans for their support and noted that his wife and children would be by his side on the road to recovery. He mentioned that he would appreciate any prayers going forward for himself and his family.

This is unsettling news for Buffalo fans and NFL supporters around the globe. Kelly played for the Bills from 1986 through 1996 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

During his time in upstate New York, Kelly helped lead his franchise to four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990 through 1993. He was elected to five Pro Bowls, made three All-Pro teams and remains the Bills' leader in all-time passing yards—with 35,467—17 years after his retirement.

Kelly was a major contributor in the USFL early in his career, playing for the Houston Gamblers in 1984 through 1985 and winning MVP honors before the organization folded and the league collapsed shortly afterwards.

Despite running up against some of best opponents in NFL history during those Super Bowl runs, the 53-year-old signal-caller may now be facing his toughest challenge yet.

Hopefully, the surgery is successful and Kelly beats his cancer to make a full recovery and return to leading a normal life in short order.

Glad to see the cancer was isolated.  Hope he makes a full recovery.

Jim Kelly & the Bills were my first truely hated team. Those being the days before the Sunday Ticket, I could always count on seeing the Dolphins play the Sunday they had the Bills on schedule. Unfortunately, the Bills were a very good team back then.

It's funny how now that he doesn't play anymore, my hatred for the guy has subsided.  I hope he recovers from it.

Per Rochester Dummocrap and Chronic-ill,

Jim Kelly is cancer free upon a followup from surgery and will not undergo chemotherapy at this time.

The cancer is back. Bad news for Jim Kelly. Feel bad for the guy. Never a fan of him when he played but he has done a lot of good for charity and helped a lot of people. Hope he can get well.

A week or so ago, Rick Reilly wrote an extremely cool column on Jim Kelly...

^^^I was wondering this myself. I use to chew tobacco but stopped after seeing pictures of someone with jaw cancer.

I thought most oral cancers came from oral sex and STDs?

Jim Kelly made a surprise visit to the Bills' minicamp yesterday to address the players.  He has been home from the hospital for the past two weeks.

Good news for Jim Kelly, a follow up exam showed no signs of cancer, three months after his chemo & radiation treatment.
