I stole the idea from David Kaplan's twitter question he posed yesterday,and forgot to post it....

My Apologies  to the few of you that your significant other reads the board,I don't mean to get you in any trouble....

Would you hire your significant other to work for you?

I thought the question interesting,and my boss said,if I owned the business,she'd could be a partner.If they worked for someone else,he couldn't be her boss,he wouldn't feel right.If they worked in different departments,no problems...

I'm single so I can only go on this with experiences from my past. My long term ex and I did work together in a postion where I was her supervisor. It was horrible. I think it would have been much easier if we were equals or worked in different departments. Direct supervision of someone you are romantically involved with is terrible.

I met my wife while working together with her. I would hire her anytime. She doesn't like to work, but she's a terrific worker.

I could as long as it was for the right position.  My wife has always been the "good" employee so I'd have no reason to expect any different. Over the last 25 years we have done numerous projects together. She has her strengths and I have mine and we have no issue letting go of control.

I've had many good friends work for me over the years as well as having worked with my brothers. In our family more is expected from family. I don't think she would expect it any other way.

For the record I have absolutely fired my best friend. In our early twenties and my first supervisor role. I was a bridge foreman and he kept showing up late as he was single and partied all the time. One of my best guys but set a bad example too many times so I had to let him go.

No I would absolutely not hire her.  My wife is fabulous around the house with tools, but when it comes to cars, it's like trying to explain to the deer why you have headlights in the first place. 

However, I can do probably 80% of her legal work as it is now just from being around her and watching her do it.

The question wasn't "would you hire your significant other if your family was in desperate financial straits?" any more than it was "would you hire your significant other if she didn't need to work and you were screwing your secretary on the side?"

Both of those conditions simplify the question to the point of being meaningless.
