http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/10/adam-vinatieri-field-goals-over-50-yards-should-be-worth-four-points/

Adam V proposed changing the rules to make FG over 50 yards worth 4 points.

I love the idea.

Would add an interesting dynamic to the game

(Then again I also feel that the adopting of the three point rule by the NBA was the best move it has made in 50 years)

Imagine taking a false start penalty or downing the ball for a loss to back it up and get into 4-point FG range...

I could see that, but it is from where it is kicked so you might just need a stronger long snapper if it is already 4th down.

stupid rule in my opinion if they do it. End of the game down by 3 a team could drive to around midfield area and then start to kill the clock by taking a knee. Kick a 4pt FG to win. Takes all the excitement out of the game

^^^So a 50+ yard field goal (which is no where near a guarantee) to win a game takes the excitement away from you? I don't get that a all.

I doubt many coaches would have the balls to do that.  The safe move is get closer try for a TD and absent that take a short FG to force it into OT.

What it would more likely do is:

1) 4th down team naturally would attempt a 47 yarder, tries 50 yarder instead.

2) team down by and at midfield rather than attempt a hail mary to win take a shot a the FG for OT.

Yep. If a team drives to the 35 yard line with say a 1:30 to go and is down 3. The other team has no timeouts or 1 timeout then they start taking a knee to run the clock down so they are at the range of a "plus 50 yard FG" to win the game....that sucks the life out of the game. Where NOW that team in that  1:30 tries to score a TD and would settle for a FG to force overtime. Much more exciting.

This new rule would kill the game. Nobody pays to watch kickers.

Depends on if you got a good kicker or not. If you got a Vinatari or a Tucker....screw it, I'm playing for the 4pt 50+ yard field goal.

Even with adam v. that is pretty risky he is appx 50% on 50+

No matter what the sport, I don't like the idea of always tweaking/changing the rules.

Point is with some of the better kickers I would rather (and I think many coaches would) play for a 50+ 4pt FG to win it rather than try and score a TD and risk a turnover or just settle for overtime.  It would suck the life out of the end of games and I think that is bad for the sport.

You are being a bit overly dramatic MikeO. How many games do you expect this scenario to actually happen in? This is only 1 more point than a 50 yard field goal gets you right now. That means how many games do you expect that 1 point swing to have made a difference in during a final drive of a game?

How many games come down to 3pts or less or a late FG to force overtime....answer: A LOT! This will happen more than ya think.

I don't see it happening anyway, this is just some kicker running his mouth telling us what he "hopes for" and "wants." The competition committee has 3 coaches on it and coaches HATE when extra decisions are placed in their lap (like this.) I don't see Fisher, Lewis, and Tomlin fighting for this rule change if it ever came to the competition committee. In fact they probably would try to kill it

Most games decided by 4 points or less do not end with a scenario setting up this field goal try anyway. I do not expect this scenario to come into play as much as you think. I started going through last season's games but I just don't have the time today. In the first two weeks I found one scenario Mia -Colts in week 2. The Colts could have forced a tie, but there were over two minutes on the clock when they were in range for this 50+ yarder we are discussing.
