It is a tradition for players to slap a "Play like a champion today" on the way out of the locker room.  Lou Holtz started this tradition in 1986, but it may have gone back before that.  He saw the sign in an old photo, but nobody knew where it came from or where it went.

St. Joseph's Hawk mascot represents its motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die".  Considered a great honor, the student donning the suit at basketball games flaps his/her wings the entire time, even during halftime.
