More trouble in the Bay Area.  Aldon Smith mentioned the word "bomb" at LAX.  Now he's been taken into custody.

I split this as it felt like it needed it's own thread. What a stupid thing to do. I'm not sure if this guy was making a joke or being an ass since he was pulled aside by the TSA but either way, everyone knows they are not going to play around.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/15/report-49ers-very-unlikely-to-pick-up-option-on-aldon-smith/

Looks like Aldon Smith has possibly played his last game for SF

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the team is “very unlikely” to extend the deal.

Kawakami also believes that Smith “probably” won’t play for the 49ers in 2014.  The mechanism for Smith’s unavailability is unclear.  He could be suspended by the league under multiple policies and/or he could be placed on the non-football injury/illness list by the team if he has had a relapse of his alcohol issues.

This story is unclear to me...

Was it ever released what he actually said?  Or they just arrested him for saying "bomb" in an airport?

Seems like there has to be more to this story...

He was pulled aside by TSA for a random security check which is common place. He was making a stink about it and was "belligerent and uncooperative" according to reports. Then as he was walking away he said he was in possession of a bomb. That's when he got arrested.

OK, so all it takes is a simple "let's look though his bag" and let him go.  Why is this such a huge story?  It probably happens to regular people 5 times per day across the country.

A False Bomb Threat at an airport is a real serious crime. Not something you "just let him go" for. In Massachusetts this charge gets you up to a $50,000 fine and possibly up to 20 years in prison. In NY it's considered an "E Felony" which in NY is no less than 1 year in prison and no more than 18 months. I don't know the California law for this crime but I am sure it is very serious and falls somewhere in-between NY and Mass as most states do.

In a post 9/11 world I seriously doubt this happens on a regular basis as well up to 5 times a day at airports. It doesn't matter that he didn't have a bomb its' that  the "threat" that he did have one through his words and the possible chaos he could have created through his words is the crime.

State law is irrelevant.  Bomb threats at airports are covered under federal law not state law.  And in order for a bomb threat to be a felony in New York it needs to be directed against a school.

A bomb threat is much different than a passing comment like "jeez, you'd think I have a bomb in my bag"

That's hardly a threat.

A threat is when you place an unaccompanied suitcase in the terminal and then call someone and say "I HAVE PLANTED A BOMB"

This is true.

And because of that it is unlikely that he will actually be prosecuted and the limit of his legal issue will be arrested, miss his flight and not get a refund for the ticket, and the case be dismissed in 6 months if he doesn't do it again.

Generally bad jokes cause you to miss your flight and spend anywhere from 30 mins to 24 hours detained with no prosecution.  Still a dumb thing to do.

But seeing as he has had multiple run ins with the law and an alcohol problem, the 49ers may just cut ties with him.

The bigger story here is that this is not normal, adjusted adult behavior.  People get stopped in airports and checked for security.  They don't make big stinks about it getting themselves detained and they certainly don't make flippant comments about bombs when in this situation.  It's the behavior of a troublemaker/moron that has a history of idiocy.

Character matters with these players and unless you are just the best player on the field, you better have it or nobody will want you in the locker room.

Which is not what he said from reports. He said, to paraphrase, I have a bomb.

Saying "I have a bomb" in an airport is the same as saying "Fire" in a crowded theater. You are doing it to cause a problem and it can create a panic. It is not something to be joked about or taken lightly.
