If you count in SF's trade for Stevie Johnson today, the 49ers have come out of the first 3 rounds with a wealth of talent:

S/CB Jimmie Ward (fills immediate need for slot corner)
RB Carlos Hyde (#1 RB on my list)
C Marcus Martin (#1 C on my list)
LB Chris Borland (tough $%&^, good depth while Bowman heals)
OG Brandon Thomas (elite talent we can stash on PUP this year, great insurance if SF lets Iupati go at end of season)
WR Stevie Johnson

And we have 2 4th rounders, 2 5th rounders, 1 6th and 2 7th rounders tomorrow. I just want them to move up and grab Pierre Desir with their early 4th round pick. It's been a while since I've wanted a player on the 49ers this much...surely they'll pick him to reward me for being such a loyal fan all these years. Grin

Draft is entering Rd 7 so its pretty much over.

Teams I thought had a GOOD draft:  Jax, SF, Saints, Rams, TB

Teams I thought had a BAD draft: KC, NE, Dallas, Detroit

Since I understand that Dave likes to know this sort of stuff... A pair of local FAU Owls got drafted this year:

1) Keith Reaser, FAU's injured super speedy corner, was drafted by the 49ers at pick #170
2) Randell Johnson, the Owls OLB/DE, worked out for Miami last month, but was drafted by Buffalo at #221 today

Another NFL Draft is coming in Late August when SF has to trim their roster and get rid of some quality guys. I am surprised they made so many picks and didn't trade more away for picks next year.

I agree...any time a team with deep talent makes cuts, good players end up back in the pool. I think SF took a look at the bottom of their roster, saw guys like Hampton, Bykowski, Dobbs and others that were pretty much dead weight, and figured there was room for the draft picks. I think SF pulled off a nice mix of adding guys that can help us win THIS season (Ward as the slot corner, Ellington for the return game), and high-ceiling players who can be developed into lower-cost replacements for current starters (like Brandon Thomas to groom for Mike Iupati) a year or two down the line.

Surprised they are all in with Palmer.  He's no spring chicken and he's not so great that his job is cemented.  I would think you'd want to bring in a young guy to be his successor...?

It was not an immediate need. There is no doubt they need to groom a younger guy to step in and they will likely address it more in next years draft.

Speaking of QBs...the final returns are in on the Alex Smith trade to KC. After the appropriate amount of Trent Baalke wheeling and dealing, the two second round picks we received in exchange for Alex Smith turned into the following players:

WR Stevie Johnson
RB Carlos Hyde
DE Tank Carradine
OLB Corey Lemonier
ILB Chris Borland

I was hoping Miami would have taken Martin three spots earlier, instead of Turner.  He probably could have been used as a guard, not to mention a needed backup to Pouncey who is two tweets and a night club altercation away from being deported to Cleveland.

^^^ Three of the guys that SF ended up taking, Hyde, Martin and Thomas, were all on my list of players that I was hoping Miami would consider during this draft.
