I've been contemplating which superstar's fall I feel the worst about. Since basketball and football are in full swing right now these two come to mind but if anyone can think of other sports this past year (let's not take it too far in the past) just suggest a player and I can add him to the poll.

Holy crap, I was going to ask this same (albeit more open-ended) question today.  Weird.

I don't feel right even answering this question yet, because I'm not sure how it's going to be written.  Manning still could come back and start on a relevant team.  The Lakers suck, but it's as if Kobe is on a high-paid farewell tour.

If the Lakers had any sense, they'd have never have signed Kobe up for that contract.  ...so dumb.
Manning took less money and is still looking to contribute -- so...I guess that's sadder?

Kobe has been in this league for 20 years now and has played against superstars of two different generations (and become one himself).  He's won five rings, one less than Jordan.  Only three other players can boast five rings or more.  He's entitled to go out any way he chooses.

Kobe is smart enough to know it is time to hang it up.  Peyton hasn't realized it yet.

And he's doing it with class too.  He's asking for people not to give standing ovations or gifts to him.
